His reporting was vigorous, his writing as clear as can be, his style graceful and ironic.
For many in the trade, he was a leader and a friend.
He made it look easy, and I know it wasn’t.
We are all cheated by his death. We've lost him way too soon.
    RIP.

I know this is an immeasurable loss for the family and all the more because of the unexpected and untimely circumstances. But as we sift through the debris of the 2020 election, I am keenly aware of the loss for all of us who read his articles. We could...  more

This was Jim Dwyer’s approach to tennis:

I was the subway reporter for The Times and had the pleasure of working with Jim on stories and learning from him. He was so generous with his time and encouraging and took an interest in my two young sons. I'm so grateful for his friendship.

Dear Cathy, Catherine, Maura, and all your loved ones. Jim grew up a couple of blocks from me on 95th street, where I lived when first in New York. Although we didn't interact that often, I am blessed to have known Jim. My first remembrance of Jim was...  more

Dear Cathy, Maura and Catherine, my deepest condolences - I will miss Jim very much. We became "family" just recently it seems. Sebastian's and Maura's wedding in 2017 set the start for a new chapter - now it is cut short with both Dad's...  more

We presented a panel discussion with Jim at Deutsches Haus at NYU a few weeks before his daughter Maura married my brother Sebastian, and I remember how much fun I had hanging out with Cathy and Jim - my brother's soon-to-be in-laws. The panel was a huge...  more

Kaye Molloy Despite the wide Atlantic between us, the Dwyers and Molloys have been toing and froing between New York and Ower, birthplace of Jim’s mother Mary, for nearly sixty years. An unbreakable bond of love and friendship between our two families has...  more

Jim and I on St. Patrick's Day 2016 in the newsroom of The New York Times. By sheer coincidence, we proud sons of Irish immigrants were wearing the same cheap tie bought in the duty-free shop at Shannon Airport. Up Galway. Up Kerry.

Jim was one of the speakers at a wonderful tribute to Pete Hamill at an NYU/Glucksman Ireland House event in December 2018. He was, as usual, in perfect pitch.

    For Cathy, Maura, and Catherine:

I met Jim Dwyer on an early fall day in 1971. We stood with our hands in our pockets bracing against the wind from Central Park, in front of the gym entrance to Loyola School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, waiting to...  more

I'd also like to recall Jim as a union activist. His care about how workers were treated was scarcely confined to his column. Jim walked the walk. His presence at the forefront of the NewsGuild lent us tremendous gravity during crucial negotiations.

Judd Sparling and Jim were colleagues for 32 years, beginning in 1988 at Newsday, when Judd edited Jim's subway column, and continuing into their days at The Times.

Jim honored me by attending my marriage to Scott Bane in May 2012, at the Fourth Universalist Society meeting house. In his row, you can also see Jim Estrin, Pete Khoury, and Ken Belson of The Times. Joe Sexton and Dan Barry are visible behind him.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Jim, probably not much more than 30-years-old, flanked by two other, much older, giants of American journalism, Sydney Schanberg and Murray Kempton. When Jim arrived at NY Newsday, a few months after I did, our...  more
