This is one of my favorite pictures of Jim, probably not much more than 30-years-old, flanked by two other, much older, giants of American journalism, Sydney Schanberg and Murray Kempton. When Jim arrived at NY Newsday, a few months after I did, our editor Don Forst told me, "This kid's going to be one of the immortals." When I relayed that to Jim, probably a couple of years later, he looked a little dismissive, a little pleased, and he probably felt both. Jim was never full of himself, but I think he was always full of confidence.
