I’m sending my love and support to help carry the grief of E’s sudden departure. I would like to attend the celebration of her life later this summer, to commemorate the lovely and generous E.

In 1994, E. and I became next door neighbors on 51st Street in the Temescal neighborhood. I was a dirty fingernailed farmer (soon to be estate gardener) new to city living and we bonded over our love of plants. She was a couple years younger than me yet more like an older sister, so urbane and knowledgeable...funny and friendly, also super smart and badass.

Thank you E. for your generosity. For letting me hang out in your apartment into the wee hours. I don’t remember asking first or waiting for an invitation, rather just showing up, and you put up with it.

Thanks E. for introducing me to the open space and natural beauty above the St. Mary’s cemetery. Thanks also for taking me to the UC Botanical Garden, and for teaching me the scientific names of plants. I think it was under your influence that I started calling myself a horticulturalist in addition to a gardener and farmer, because you inspired me to learn the Latin names and get more into the science.

Of course, E. also introduced me to Market Hall, excellent food and cooking, and creative flower arrangements and style. E. threw awesome parties back then - usually themed and full of fun games.

Also, Amerin, as you know the West Philly Preschool Co-op wouldn’t have happened without the inspiration of what you two put together in Oakland. And you give me credit for helping you two achieve home ownership since I passed on that cheap living space above Marilynn’s garage in Rockridge to you two when I moved. I’m honored to have helped, to have reciprocated for what E.’s friendship offered me.

I’m sorry that I won’t have an opportunity to catch up with E., to visit a botanical garden together or a back yard hang out talking about garden design.

I met Elizabeth back in mid 80’s when I was 16 years old and she was known (to me) as ‘Mohawk Beth’. She intimidated me—she seemed so badass (and she always had the best hair). We had a casual acquaintance in those years and I do recall going to... moreI met Elizabeth back in mid 80’s when I was 16 years old and she was known (to me) as ‘Mohawk Beth’. She intimidated me—she seemed so badass (and she always had the best hair). We had a casual acquaintance in those years and I do recall going to a TV party at her house (we watched Mad Max—where you there?) many of the attendees are still my friends today.

Fast forward to the 2000’s: I had moved to LA and decided to return to Oakland to go to the Ruthies Reunion show (2006–where you there?) and found myself in line for the Andy Gump toilet outside, by the skate ramp. A non-mohawked E (unrecognizable at first) was next to me in line and asked if I remembered her. She proceeded to tell me about her poster business, her love for France and the beautiful life she had made for herself since we saw each other last. We instantly connected over our love for antiques and art.

From then on we built a friendship that only became closer as I saw what a beautiful family and home she and Amerin created; saw her build her business; saw her mentor and inspire her employees, collaborators and customers;
listened to her share her encyclopedic knowledge of 20th century graphic/advertising design, WW1 and WW2 Propaganda etc etc; saw her strategically bring people together to form new and lasting friendships at dinner parties in Oakland, LA and Palm Springs (were you there?); advocate for our beloved Oakland and recommend new restaurants and businesses to support...I could go on forever.

Elizabeth was self made woman, truly DIY, a tough negotiator, a brilliant business mind, a true intellectual in the best sense, a sophisticated and a brawler in equal measure and an absolute and unapologetic romantic.

I admired her so much and deeply appreciated all of the energy and time she put into developing our friendship. She loved unconditionally and was a fiercely loyal friend.

She was one of a kind and made a huge impact on my adult life.
I hope she knew this. I think she did.
I wish I could have done something comparable for her that could have make a difference.

My heart goes out to you Amerin, Jackson and Esme and your family, the Norris family and all of you out there like me who were touched by Elizabeth’s powerful spirit. less

Much love to all of you, I know it has been a while but fiercely holding you in my heart nonetheless!

E touched me in so many ways. Her vision and professional aspirations. The preschool coop insights and vision and nativation. Gardening. Even how she spoke to mental health and substance dynamics, the irony. A small gift of French lotion on a random bday. She saw things in me I didn’t see in myself. My heart pours open, she was in the inner circle of it regardless of geography and frequency of contact.

I always assumed we’d meet again soon and pick up where we’d left off. Kid work garden romance people insights and all the rest spilling over into a catapulting and animated catch up. Her keen insights and humour underscoring the conversation in direct diffused light on the patio of a coffee shop. We’d review what poster I should finally buy, something plant-like with stems and roots. And talk about France and how Tobias was going for an exchange next year, get tips for what we must see in Paris this summer. We’d reminisce about the preschool coop, our dear cast of characters, the learning themes, naptime rituals - how Jackson needed his back scratched, T needed to be pinned down a little, how Jet had his binky. She’d vividly describe what the kids were up to, what was happening in her business to make it thrive and reach out to the hearts of her clients. We’d talk divorce and single life. I’d wax poetic about all the things I appreciated about her candor, approach to life, the ways she touched and continues to touch my heart. I’d say that I loved her, that she is one of those top 5-6 or so stellar friends in my life who shine truth and just get it. I’d buy a fucking poster finally and we’d recommit to stay in touch with grandeur plans of meeting up in France, going to Australia and sending T and Jackson on wild teenage outdoor adventures. less
