William Hunter “Scoot” Powell, III, 52, of New York, NY and Amagansett, NY, died unexpectedly on July 12, 2019, in Montauk, NY.
William was born September 13, 1966, in Beaver Falls, PA and grew up in Roanoke, Va. He was a graduate of Patrick Henry High school in Roanoke and Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. He received a B.S. in Economics in 1989 from Elon University in Elon, NC where he was a founding member of the Theta Omega chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
William enjoyed a successful career in medical sales and marketing, both in Los Angeles, CA, and later, in the greater New York area. He was also an accomplished comedian, writer and actor, having appeared on a variety of feature films and television shows early in his career.
William loved life. His sense of humor was legendary as was his compassion for others. He was an avid sportsman and was happiest traveling the world with friends and family. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, snowboarding, skiing and hunting. He especially loved the water, and in recent years divided his time between homes in New York City and Amagansett, NY.
He is survived by his mother, Beth McKim Powell of Roanoke, Va; sisters, Virginia Lodge of Nashville, TN and Lizanne Shaver of Charlotte, NC; and six nieces and nephews; Emily C. Lodge, Brenna M. Lodge, Jesse S. Lodge, Mary Hunter Shaver, Anne Pierson Shaver and Liam S. Shaver; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins
He is preceded in death by his father, William Hunter Powell, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 73 S. Fullerton Avenue Montclair, NJ 07042. A reception will be held following the service at the Montclair Golf Club from 12 noon- 2:00 p.m. 25 Prospect Avenue, West Orange, NJ 07052.
