Robert “Bob” Illig was born to Anicetus and Dela Illig in Pennsylvania January 7, 1927.
A veteran of WWII, he proudly served as FC3 on the U.S.S. Vincennes CL64 1944-46.
In 1947 he married his sweetheart Mary Ellen Mix and had five children, David Robert, Edward James, Clair Thomas, Janet Marie, and Brian Francis.
Through the years, Bob played semi-pro baseball and football and wired locomotive engines for General Electric. He was a federal firefighter at the Naval Regional Medical Center (Balboa Hospital) for 25 years, as well as a football official for local high school games.
He loved playing golf and was a big fan of the San Diego Padres and the Chargers. Bob wore t-shirts with quirky sayings on them, and had a sign on his door that said “SOB: Sweet Ol’ Bob”. His charisma lit up the room, and he was loved everywhere he went.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen and sons Edward and Clair, and survived by sons David and Brian, daughter Janet, and five grandchildren.
Bob will be dearly missed, but never forgotten, forever in our hearts.
A funeral service and Mass will be at 2:00 p.m. on January 3rd at Mission San Diego de Alcalá, 10818 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, CA 92108. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
