Obituary of Peter Charles Weinberg
August 12, 1948 - April 1, 2020

Peter Charles Weinberg passed away on April 1, 2020, after a valiant battle with COVID-19. He is survived by Betsy, his loving wife of 33 years, and his two beloved children Margit (Blair) and Raymond. Beams of sunshine in Peter's life were his two grandchildren, Louie and Diana. Peter is also survived by his sisters Mary-beth (Rick) and Jeanie (Tom), nieces and nephews Rob (Jessica), Cam (Becca), Rachel (Will), Drew and Scott.

 

Peter was born on August 12, 1948 in New York, NY to Jean (Maloney) and Raymond Weinberg. Peter was raised in the Bronx. He attended Bronx public schools and played hoops in local playgrounds with friends and strangers, alike. Due to his participation in the rapid advance class at J.H.S.101, Peter graduated from Christopher Columbus High School at 16 years old, and two short months later matriculated into The Colorado College. He brought with him his formidable Bronx-honed athletic skills and began his career on the Varsity basketball and intramural football teams. He excelled in mathematics, his major, and graduated with a degree in that field. All this time, Peter was developing an expansive skill set at the Boys Athletic League summer camps where his father was an executive and camp director. Peter started as a camper at about seven years old, and then was selected to be a senior camper, kitchen boy, counselor, and finally Director of Camp Kirby, the organization’s training camp for adolescent boys who showed interest and potential to be counselors.

 

Peter adhered to the values taught at camp and in his home: to respect all people of all races, religions, and ethnicities, and to accord to all basic dignity and a fair chance to survive in the world.

After graduating from college, Peter was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served from 1969-1971 in the finance department at Fort Hood, TX. He also engaged in every sport available. Peter put his newly acquired financial skills to use while attending the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania where he earned his MBA. After graduating from Wharton, he started his career in accounting at Arthur Young and Company. Over the years, Peter held various positions in the financial services industry, most recently as Senior Vice President, Controller at Patriot Bank in Stamford, CT.

 

Betsy and Peter were joyfully married in August 1987 and took up residence in Manhattan on East 79th Street. In 1996, the family moved to Mamaroneck, NY where they spent many happy years boating, gardening, laughing and raising their family.

Peter has always been, and will forever remain an honored hero of our family, having survived first hand both attacks on The World Trade Center in 1993 and 2001. On 9/11, at the first sign of danger, Peter announced to his staff that it was time to exit the building. He helped save many lives, risking his own by way of his quick thinking and bravery.

Above all else, Peter was always a gentleman and will be remembered for his love of family, resilience in life, kindness, great sense of humor, love of animals (Jackie, Georgia and Willie) and for being an unwavering and devoted New York sports fan.
