Mary Ellen, 81, of Silver Spring died 1/17/2020. She is survived by 4 children, Jack (Marilyn) of Tampa, Beth (Jeff) of Tampa, Susan (Randy) of Ocala, Cindy of Raleigh, NC; 7 grandchildren: Madison, Macy, Johnny, Robbie, Lauren, Alex, and Kelsey.
She was born in Schenectady, NY to Doris & Herbert Carlson and had an older brother, Peter. She attended Fayetteville-Manlius High School and later attended The College of William and Mary. She became a Gamma Phi Beta, played tennis, basketball, and field hockey for the Tribe. She graduated in 1956 and went to work for IBM in the Washington, D.C. area. It was here that she married John Coffey and devoted the majority of her life to being a mother. She dedicated her life to her family and friends. She enjoyed playing golf, tennis, watching professional sports, traveling with her cousin Anne, and was an accomplished bowler.
She is fondly remembered for her love of thrift store and garage sale shopping, casino card tables, a cold budweiser, cubs baseball, and W&M football. She continued to attend Tribe homecoming events every year of her life. She was an annual volunteer at the Citi Open tennis tournament as well as an usher/volunteer at the Warner Theater.
Her positive energy will be missed as she found enjoyment in everything she did. A celebration of her life will be held on February 29 at 11:00am at the Inter-faith Chapel 3680 S Leisure World Blvd. Silver Spring, MD 20906. A reception will follow at the Clubhouse Grill.
