I enjoyed dealing with him as a CG Supervisor and he was clearly intelligent and capable, but I’ll always remember him fondly for his smile, his kindness and his amicable nature. VFX is obviously a stressful industry with long hours and difficult tasks that require constant changes. He coped easily with the strain and pressure, and never let the stress get inside. He was great at his job, but he excelled at life. less

She thought we’d make great drinking buddies since we both lived in Playa Del Rey. She was definitely right. John and I became fast friends. And most Friday nights we’d have a drink or three or four at either hacienda, The Shack, or Prince of Whales or all 3. Many long conversations were had, over politics, work, or some science fiction property. Over time John became an older brother to me. Friday’s became not about the drinking but unwinding about the week. John was always able to give out great advice when it came to work and life. And his positive upbeat attitude is something you could always rely on, and is something I will always miss. I’ve become a better man knowing him, and I’m so fortunate to have known him for these last 7 years.
John loved many sci-fi properties. But I think it’s safe to say Star Trek The Next Generation was his favorite. Jean-Luc Picard, was a role model for him growing up. Picard represented a moral compass for what was right, and standing up for what was right even when it was difficult. Picard also believed in the humanity of us as well as finding it in others. One of John’s favorite episodes was Yesterday’s Enterprise. Let me end by quoting a speech Picard gives at the end of the episode with one change.
“Let’s make sure history never forgets the name ... John Schratz ... Picard Out” less

FUN TIMES!! 🌴 John and I took Ukulele lessons which he mastered with just one lesson as for myself it would probably take a lifetime of lessons to get it right. Its been 6 days since John passed away, and I STILL cannot find the words to say.
He is my family, and has been my daughter's partner in life, seemingly, forever.
It's impossible to try to summarize what I've seen him do and give and that's because there's just so much.
And then it hit me this morning; JOHN GAVE LIFE.
Like playing the ukulele at family events, sharing the unending amount of knowledge he possessed on so many subjects, bringing me a heater at the end of a winter day when he was on a job and probably hadn't slept, painting with me for my birthday and praising my embarrassingly unaccomplished work. He GAVE LIFE.
He has a way of putting others at ease, making people laugh and finding a quirky humor in the simplest of things. And when the situation calls for it, giving even the toddlers the dignity he feels they deserve, by explaining things or teaching them things, adult to "adult". Effortlessly, he could get his message across. Giving Life.
He could sing. Has a great singing voice, matter of fact. And he knew the words to any, any, any song playing.
He was always more than kind to me, even when at times he had reason not to be.
And for my daughter, he utterly and completely ADORES her. He took care of her at a level and in a way that as a Mother, I'm eternally in awe. He could make her laugh when she was angry. He'd comfort her with reason and understanding when she was confused or upset with something that occurred in her life. His eyes just sparkled when she talked, or cooked, or when she found pleasure in things. He LOVED to see her happy. He LOVED to see her triumphs in life. He was who she turned to, who she listened to, and who she knew she could depend on.
So many people know the incredible abilities he has as an artist. Although I'm not as familiar with that, I am very familiar with his artistic abilities in life and how THAT was a part of everything he did. Like fixing cars, making dinner, buying guitars, driving, talking about his favorite places in Chicago, telling a joke. All in a way that was genuinely UNIQUE. I never saw him do one single thing that was exactly the same as someone else. That's what I mean when I say he was artistic in the ways I saw him approach life.
He is utterly and absolutely UNIQUE.
I haven't said one billionth of what I want to say, John. But my words are from the heart and let me just say this...I love you for the amount of Love and Life you've given to me, Suzette, and our family. You've left a part of you in me, and in all of us.
Wherever you are, I'll love you forever.

Suzette comes from a very large family that has get togethers constantly and they wood both come to most of them, we all looked forward to them coming down. I always was intrigued to hear what show or movie he was working on at that time. In conversations with him found out how much he knew about the galaxy, infact he even put an app on my phone so I could learn all the different stars and planets and where they where located in the sky. We did enjoy our time with him in Hawaii and yes he was very happy to buy his ukulele and take lessons with my sister from an hawaian music teacher, I also enjoyed the helicopter ride with him and suzette and the south Pacific musical and snorkeling with him the whole week was a lot of fun, cause normally we only get to spend 1 or 2 days with them . I will miss John very much, he made me laugh and made me happy to know that him and Suzette were happy and that he took good care of her. The last thing I said to him at Thanksgiving was see you in June as I hugged him and said goodbye. My heart is broken💔
For my niece for the loss of the love of her life and how with this covid -19 we can not be there to help her through these long days without him, sending virtual hugs till we can be there in person.

It was my first time meeting anyone and I was nervous and didn't really know anyone. I didnt know who to talk to except Kirsten. John, being the kind hearted person he is, must have seen that and decided to start talking to me over a beer. After awhile, we started talking about IT stuff and what we did for a job, movies, cars, favorite childhood toys and memories, computers you name it!
It got to be that I would look forward to family gatherings as I knew I would get to hang out with him and talk about things we both liked. I was always sad when he was stuck on a project and couldn't make it or Suzy and him had a previous engagement.
I am deeply saddened that I will never again get to see him, laugh with him and share with him the craziness either of our lives were leading. He was truly a wonderful person to be around and I will never ever forget him.

I still remember the slight banter John had with my son about being good to Suzette and that memory brought a smile to my face today. I thank you so much for being an amazing partner for my sister.

We became literally /instant/ friends the second we met when I began working on a show he was in charge of. Then as we talked we found out we were both from Chicago and both /huge/ Star Trek fans. Our fully organic friendship grew quickly from there as did our excellent and fun work relationship. We used to bring in Trek collectibles we would get to show each other. While we both loved all Trek, his fav was TNG, mine was TOS. We would bring in and show each other our Eaglemoss ENTERPRISES, his the D, mine the Connie. He eventually would end up at my house and he loved my genre-based and Star Trek adorned house. He was my friend that fully “got” what I was into and shared an equal love of it. We loved Star Trek sure, but we were both Star Wars fanboys, too. I remember when he pulled me away from my desk like we were two excited 12-year-olds just to show me the new windshield sunscreen he had just bought for his new Fiat, of Han, Chewey, Obi-Wan and Luke in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. I was like; “Whoa, brother, that's sO cool! Where'd you get that? Must have!” When I got a new screen for myself it was of Luke in the cockpit of his Snowspeeder. I picked that one because I was thinking and aping you, brother! Never fails to make me think of you when I put it up or look at it, and it will even more now, brother...
John was one of my supervisors at CoSA and totally understood my approach to creating assets and fully trusted me to just let me go and he knew he’d get more than he could hope for and on time. Via our personal friendship, he knew I was a self-starter and that like himself I had also had my own business for years, and also that I'd been an art director and manager myself before, too, thus I required no typical oversight to get the job done. Which he loved. He was a dream boss in that regard. We respected and trusted each other impeccably as workmates. We were more a fully enthusiastic creative team-up rather than supervisor and subordinate. He fully understood that I had arrived at a place in my career that I just wanted to build and paint models and he let me run free to do just that. He’d come over now-and-then to visit my desk as just friends, or we'd go out and grab lunch together, and vent to me about the crazy nonsense that comes part-and-parcel with being a supervisor and trying to get things done on a tight deadline and then look at my models on screen and just smile. I used to joke with him as I was 15 years older than him; “You’ll give up the money and headaches that come with being a supervisor one day, too, brother, and return to the box (the computer, actually hands-on making art).” He would kinda laugh and then smile-sigh and say, “Yeah, you’re the smart one, Deg.” I’d say, “You’ll get there, too, youngling.” He’d smile weary-eyed. I’d smile back and hug and fist-bump him. Onward!
We loved working on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.“ together as we were both fanboys of the show as well. It was a friendship made in Heaven really. John was always one of the coolest, sweetest, mega-talented, funny, laid-back, conscientious, and caring humans I’ve ever been blessed to have in my life. I will miss John dearly on so, so many levels. 😞❤️
We also shared a love for genre t-shirts and I’ll always remember him always smiling his great smile in his “Speed Racer” t-shirt in our back-yard for our 4th of July BBQ.
My heart is with your family and loved ones.

My bag put down, my meeting with him was made around French cheese, chocolate and special spice fort my boeuf carotte. To put John in the mood, we opened a bottle of red wine and it all started well ;)
I discovered a charming, shy, funny and very intelligent man. A man who loves his work and with whom I have been able to share my love of entertainment, with whom I have been able to debate the importance of job like this, of the fact that he participated in making people dream, such as me, at the cinema, behind our computer. That thanks to this type of creativity our mind can finally escape and find refuge in a beautiful place.
He knew all the films, all the series, even the most obscure of the 90s! And now I promise to you John, yes i will watch Battlestar Galactica :)
I discovered, my Suzette, that the man you had chosen, was kind, generous and very funny. Our short film on a green background with Penny and Govy the dogs has not yet received an Oscar but I do not give up hope!
Today, a few weeks away, you should both have come to France, to Paris and the countryside to attend the 24h of Le Mans. I would have welcomed you, I would have made John discover our wine cellar, our saucisson and all the other wonders that I reserved for him.
But I hope that from where he is, he will finally see all of this and finally travel non-stop, discover all these places you told him about.
Today I’m going to toast with my glass of red wine to the wonderful man he was, to the lover who knew how to take care of you my dear friend, and to the fantasy that he reigned around his loved ones.
To John, to you my precious Suze, to all your friends and to all those who have had the chance to know him and share moments of life!
See you in few decades and until then, the wine is still flowing, the barbecues are still heating, the entertainers continue to make us dream and, that life carries us.
With all my love

Ive only known John for a few months, since he hit the ground running as a supervisor on the show we worked on; but in that time his remarkably magnetic personality really hit home for me.
When I first met him, John was clearly on top of things from the get-go. It seemed like it came standard with the Schratz package… That attitude, in the trenches if you will, even when several fires needed to be put out at once, John was calm and collected because he knew how to put them out, and helped get the job(s) done. “Thats why Im here” he would say.
As a friend, John had that lively spark to our little room, with Morris, Bryant, Tony, John Rouse and I. It was rarely a dull moment: From nerding out about Trek, Wars, anything sci-fi; his awesome collection of old-school (the best school) art books; newest tech to come out to the market; just shooting the shit in general, laughing his ass off to the newest quotes to hit our dry erase board; to him wiping his sweaty forehead after (finally) getting his hands on some of my spicy chili.
Out of many fond memories I had with John, one was where he absolutely geeked out at my TIE Interceptor scale model kit, where I had added a full custom-lit interior that was not included with the set. After mentioning the next model kit I was intending to build, Airwolf from the tv show, it was great to hear Schratz periodically humming the main theme over the next few days.
Just one of those many, quick laughs throughout the day as I worked with John.
He truly was a genuine rarity of personality, talent, and spirit that he brought to the team. And this, is from someone who only knew him for a few months. My heart goes out to those who have spent years or a lifetime with him.
Considering his love for Trek,
“Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I’d rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and allows us to cherish every moment...because they’ll never come again.”
- Jean-Luc Picard

He had a kindness and generosity of spirit that was so effortless that it was truly remarkable. I will never forget and always be forever grateful for the way in which he shared his kindness, appreciation, generosity, and encyclopedic knowledge of so many things with all of us that had the honor of knowing him.
To his family, his loved ones, and the rest of his friends... I wish you peace in this time. Your John was truly one of the greats!
I can imagine your face lighting up with each new discovery, as you explore the infinite reaches of the universe and find answers to all those questions, my great friend, and tonight, I will raise a glass in your honor. less
