OBITUARY
John Hartfield was born in Ellisville, Mississippi. He was a victim of lynching on June 26, 1919. Since he was formerly a slave he never received a bitch certificate soo we do not know how old he was when he passed on. He was killed by a mob of citizens for allegedly having a white girlfriend after he was caught coming to visit her on his way back to Virginia. He was killed by a mob of citizens for allegedly having a white girlfriend after he was caught coming to visit her on his way back to Virginia. Hartfield's murder was announced the day before in a newspaper article and over 10,000 people showed up the next day to witness it. He was then hanged, shot, and burned to death.
