GeorgAnn L. Fleury passed peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 3, 2020 in Calabasas, California. The family will be holding a Celebration of Life at a future date once it is safe for those who wish to honor her to come together in person. In the meantime, the family has created this memorial webpage as a place to share memories and condolences. Information about the future celebration will be shared on this site as well.
GeorgAnn was born in Los Angeles on July 20th, 1922 to George and Ethel Riethmiller. She was the second eldest child of four children with one older sister, Lillian, one younger brother, Don and one younger sister, Michelle. As a child during the Great Depression, she had fond memories of sharing her family’s small home with her aunt and her six cousins, enjoying their time together amidst difficult economic times. After high school, GeorgAnn started business school and landed a job at Bank of America, earning $16 per week. She worried about her high school friends when they were drafted into military service as World War II raged. She met her future husband, Kurt von Hoetzendorff, marrying him only a month before he was drafted. As Kurt was posted around the country, GeorgAnn had their first child, Mark. Soon thereafter, Kurt was sent overseas. Upon his return, GeorgAnn gave birth to another son, Kris, and a daughter, Debbie. She later worked for California Bank, Hollywood Bank, and Rocketdyne. At nearly 40 years of age, GeorgAnn had two more sons less than a year apart in age, Scott and Ty. After parting with her first husband, GeorgAnn took a job at CSU Northridge, where she was secretary to the head librarian until her retirement at age 65. A few years later, she married Paul Fleury, who she had met years before. They were married for five years before he passed peacefully away.
GeorgAnn’s five children produced eight beloved grandchildren: Lori, Meg, Kyle, Cayley, Sean, Trevor, Erin, and Shea. GeorgAnn loved spending time with them throughout their childhood and adult lives, and cherished playing with their children, her great-grandchildren, Jack, Scott, Drew, Taylor, Landen, Riley, and Charlie. GeorgAnn was a talented artist and was part of a quilt group, forming close friendships for 40 years. In her final residence at Fairwinds in West Hills, California, her life was enriched by Maria Gariano, David Knutsen, and Melba Lima, among the many kind people she appreciated there. Other dear friends and family included Terri Ruddiman, Sherril Boller, Jennifer Boller, Mikie Riethmiller, Julie Crippen, Diane Christensen, Norma Creaghe, Linda Brody, Sheila Richards, Shawn Mastos, Louie and Eva Mastos, and Donna Rudd.
Everything in GeorgAnn’s life radiated outward from her love of family. She possessed tremendous integrity and independence and an extraordinarily positive attitude towards life. She was generous and very caring to all who knew her. On the occasion of GeorgAnn’s 95th birthday, her children wrote to her, "You are our beacon, shedding the light of love and wisdom wherever you shine. Our journeys through life are supported by your ability to listen, to forgive and forget, to be strong when your future seemed dim, to accept us no matter who we were or what we had become, to give without expecting anything in return, in being present when we needed you most, to stand up for what is right, to be tender and patient, to put joy and beautiful craftsmanship in all those things you created, to give us hope when we despaired….but most of all, to love us."
In lieu of flowers, please give a gift in GeorgAnn’s name to her favorite charities, St. Judes and Wounded Warriors.
