The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope; our communities are ready and prepared for disasters; everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products; all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.
The American Red Cross' fundamental principles are: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality. Our motto, "You Have the Power to Save a Life" is built upon and reflects such these values. less

OBITUARY
Our whole family of relatives and immediate, and everyone who knew her, were wonderfully blessed to have her beautiful spirit with us for such a long time. She was a caring, thoughtful and loving mother surrounded by her children, grand and great grandchildren in her last seasons especially. She will be profoundly missed.

Liz meant a lot to us when she was in Paso. We met often for scones and tea at my daughters house, and shared so many good times. We all loved her for her generosity, kindness, and fun loving attitude. Our groups met with another friend from Paso who has since passed away, plus 3 others that lived in the same neighborhood as Liz. I remember fondly all of our get-togethers. We all share your sadness at this time, and thank God we knew her as well as we did. You have a picture of some of us in the beautiful tribute to her on the website. less

A beautiful cool crisp day dappled with sunshine and clouds rolling overhead. We read, spoke, sang, prayed our thoughts, memories and love for Mom on that very nice day. A small miracle it was in between two wet and blustery days. There was even some snow and sleet on the day after. I will post some more info with images soon. less

I remember Mama
I remember her so agile and beautiful when she was holding Nels, the tiny infant
I remember Mom teaching me to sew on my little crank sewing machine
I remember her when we lived on the Minnehaha Parkway and she was all dressed up in a very beautiful evening gown on her way to a special event at the Eastern Star
I remember her pancakes, her Swedish pancakes, and the Swedish dishes she loved to prepare
I will always remember her amazing skills on the piano, her beautiful singing and her ability to play every kind music and every kind of instrument
I remember her when we were about to leave to move to California in 1958, and she said her famous line about “remember to get my rain boots out of the basement dryer”
I remember her being lonely, very lonely in Los Angeles
I remember her in the choir at the Lutheran Church in Greenhills, Ohio as I sat across the dais waving at her from the children's choir
I remember when she was in the hospital for a month and the three of us stood in the parking lot and waved at her trying to wave back from the window
I remember her when she came home from the hospital when I was in sixth grade; she was so frail and wasted.
I remember her when the family needed to make a decision to move back to Minneapolis and she was very clear on the topic
I remember Mom so proud to drive me to my Job's Daughters meetings
I remember her making sure that Karl had plenty of chocolate chip cookies up in Alaska
I remember her leaving for work when they lived in El Sobrante - back to teaching, and loving the music, and worrying about her students
I remember her conducting her choirs in churches and schools and with the Silver bells. It was always delightful to see the happy energy she had around bringing music forth from people
I remember how much she loved the beach at Cambria
I will never forget that she complained about her difficulty with math but could transpose any tune in her head like magic
I remember her in the flurry of preparations for Women’s Club and Golf Tournaments
I remember her ear-to-ear grin the entire time we visited Sweden and how much of her heart she found there
I remember her aging years, and her terrific determination to remain independent through so many losses - Dad, her hearing, her sight, and the place she called home for 30 years - Paso Robles
For me she has lived forever, and I will remember her and love her for the rest of my forever. less

From then on Liz was indeed my mom. She consoled me, she supported me, she helped me look ahead, she flew 2000 miles to help me with my third son, a newborn. Always gracious, generous in love. Genuine love. She made the best spaghetti sauce. She had a recipe for homemade cough syrup for my boys that won the day. She stitched baby quilts. She remembered everybody’s birthday in the whole family. Liz lived the last 20 months of her life seven minutes from me. It was the best. Twice a week we saw each other….. shopping, having Bengal Spice tea and vanilla wafers, talking family history, visiting our home, mending hems, going to the American Swedish Institute, baking scones, seems like everything was a piece of life to live together. And we laughed so much! I am very saddened by her death. Sitting with her those last weeks was an honest privilege. What a strong and loving woman. I miss her so very much. Love, Margaret, daughter-in-law who loved her like a daughter. less

She was an educator and she believed in the betterment of society. Her father, Alfred Holmes supported Elizabeth in her music studies and he himself was probably better on the violin than I will ever know - and he also had a profession in the printing industry - so the more readers and educated folks in the world, the better it is for all of us. If your in a position to donate, great! If not at this time, no worries! Much Love and God Bless to you all! less
