Bradley William Maring of San Francisco, died peacefully at age 71 of congestive heart failure in his home on March 10, 2021.  Brad was born in Galesburg, Illinois and was the only child of William “Bill” and Mildred “Mickey” Maring.  He graduated from Drake University with B.A. in Psychology in 1971, and went on to earn his M.D. from the University of Iowa in 1975.  That summer, Brad moved with his wife, Katherine, and two children, Dirksen and Bayta, to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was an emergency room physician at St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs from 1979 to 1986.

The Maring family moved to San Francisco in summer of 1986, and Brad joined the medical team of the Franciscan Treatment Room at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in 1987. In his 20+ years in occupational health with St. Francis, he played various roles, including medical director, and was instrumental in the clinic’s expansion. Brad and Katherine divorced in 1992 and Brad transitioned to a townhouse in his beloved, vibrant Hayes Valley neighborhood in 2001. In the early 2000’s, Dr. Maring, a passionate Giants fan, served at the Saint Francis Health Center at the Ballpark, where he provided occupational health care services for Giants employees, including then General Manager Dusty Baker. He was also committed to supporting public health in the community, volunteering for San Francisco needle exchange (now part of the SF AIDS Foundation) for many years.

Brad retired in 2014 and enjoyed multiple lengthy visits with his cherished grandchildren in Seattle and extensive international travel, while also soaking up every richness of the city that was his heart. Charming, brilliant, and generous to a fault, Brad’s enthusiasm for finding joy, fun, and adventure at every turn was infectious; he had a lasting impact on all those who knew and loved him. Brad is survived by his two children, Dirk and Bayta, his son-in-law Gerard, and his two grandchildren, Rupert and Katherine.
