Bénédicte Marie Clark, 69, passed away peacefully at home in the comfort and care of her daughters on January 3, 2021. 

Born in Oullins, France in 1951, Bénédicte is the second of five children of the late Maurice Thevenet and Marie Louise Bertholey. She leaves behind two daughters, Florie Jenkins and Capucine Clark, son-in-law Mike Jenkins, future son-in-law J.R. Snyder, granddaughter Romy Jenkins, brother Philippe Thevenet, sister Brigitte Ribereau-Gayon, and half-sisters Isabelle Lys, Veronique Ponsonnet, and Florence Sabot. 

She is predeceased by her husband, Jerry Clark, and sisters Pascale and Catherine Thevenet. 

In her youth, Bénédicte embraced risk and adventure through pursuits such as mountaineering or off-piste skiing in the Alps and backpacking through Afghanistan, Yugoslavia and other parts of Europe. Bénédicte’s professional calling was in speech therapy in Orliénas, France where she practiced until Jerry would eventually come along and sweep her off her feet to the States. 

Bénédicte and Jerry were married in 1984 in her birth town of Oullins, France. In their 35 years of marriage they would move from the States to France and back before finally settling in Mystic, CT. With one daughter born in the States, and one in France, they personified the family’s strong dual allegiance.

Theirs is a story of passion and true companionship that all started through Philippe, Bénédicte’s brother and Jerry’s friend and business partner, and ended tenderly at Jerry’s bedside in 2019. If Jerry were still here to tell it, he would want you to know that all it took was one fateful night at Philippe’s birthday party for her inimitable spirit, long legs, and bright eyes to turn his world upside down. Opposites in almost every regard, it was surprisingly difficult to tell where one started and the other ended. They were loyal and in sync in every aspect. 

The loss of Jerry was a blow but ever courageous, Bénédicte rallied around family and friends, threw herself into home and yard projects with gusto, and began volunteering her culinary skills at Enders Island on Masons Island, CT. 

Those fortunate enough to meet Bénédicte would tell you she was unforgettable and unapologetically her own self.  Those who called her a friend would regal her limitless kindness, hospitality, and selflessness. It was not uncommon for her daughters to swear Jerry to secrecy if they were sick or going through a rough patch as they both knew Bénédicte would be on the next plane out at the mere hint of something being amiss, so strong was her instinct to care for and protect those she loved.

Bénédicte moved through the world unencumbered by boundaries, both physical and social. She was well-intentioned and well-meaning, even when her lack of sensory awareness and haste left a small trail of chaos in her wake.  This only added to her charm and further endeared her to friends and family, who loved nothing more than recounting her misadventures.  

This side of her personality was in sharp contrast to the detail and precision she applied to her needlepoint, framing, painting, or countless other artistic ventures. Her eye for style and design was rivaled only by her culinary prowess and talents in her garden. 

One could not mention Bénédicte’s cuisine without also bringing up her and Jerry’s soirées, which over the years drew together friends from every corner of their lives into a whirlwind of dancing, laughter, and wine. Benedicte, the consummate hostess, had a unique way of drawing people out with a firm grip of the arm and a compliment that was “a la Bénédicte”, instantly disarming you with her authenticity. 

Her family deeply grieves the loss of such an incredible mother, grandmother, and sister, but takes comfort in knowing that Jerry and Ben are together again. 

A virtual memorial will be held in her honor on January 23, 2021 at 11:30am EST. Dress comfortably but not carelessly; as you all know, once Benedicte was out of her bathrobe for the day, she was stylish and meticulous.

Bénédicte Clark, 69 ans, est décédée paisiblement dans sa maison de Mystic entourée et choyée par ses filles le 3 janvier 2021.

Née à Oullins, France en 1951, Bénédicte est la deuxième des cinq enfants de feu Maurice et Marie Louise Bertholey. Elle laisse dans le deuil deux filles, Florie Anne Jenkins et Capucine Clark, son gendre Mike Jenkins, son futur gendre JR Snyder, sa petite-fille Romy Jenkins, son frère Philippe Thevenet, sa sœur Brigitte Ribereau-Gayon et ses demi-sœurs Isabelle Lys , Véronique Ponsonnet et Florence Sabot.

Son mari Jerry Clark nous avait quitté en Avril 2019. 

Dans sa jeunesse, Bénédicte aimait le risque et l’aventure à travers des activités telles que l'alpinisme ou le ski hors piste dans les Alpes et son voyage épique en Afghanistan, plus romantiques furent ses voyages en Europe.  Professionnellement Bénédicte était orthophoniste et commença sa carrière à Orliénas puis Oullins, en France, où elle exerçât  jusqu’au jour où elle part aux Etats Unis pour y rejoindre  Jerry. Jerry à l’origine partenaire professionnel et ami de Philippe, le frère de Bénédicte . 

Bénédicte et Jerry se sont mariés en 1984 dans sa ville natale d'Oullins, en France. Au cours de leurs 35 ans de mariage, ils ont déménagé des États-Unis vers la France et vice-versa avant de finalement s'installer à Mystic, CT. Avec une fille née aux États-Unis et une en France, elles personnifiaient la forte double allégeance de leur famille.

Si Jerry était encore là pour le raconter, il dirait que tout s’est joué lors d’une nuit d’anniversaire de Philippe: cette nuit-là Jerry a été bouleversé par l’esprit inimitable de Bénédicte, ses longues jambes et ses yeux scintillant de bleu. A priori deux caractères opposés à presque tous les égards, l’alchimie fut pourtant totale:  ils étaient vraiment faits l’un pour l’autre.

La perte de Jerry a été une déchirure pour Bénédicte. Toujours courageuse, Bénédicte a pu compter sur le soutien de sa famille et ses amis, s'est lancée dans des projets d’aménagement de sa maison et jardin avec enthousiasme et a commencé à offrir ses compétences culinaires à l’association d’Enders Island sur Masons Island, CT.

Ceux qui ont eu la chance de rencontrer Bénédicte vous diront qu'elle est inoubliable. Ses amis étaient séduits par sa gentillesse, son hospitalité et son altruisme sans limites. Il n'était pas rare que ses filles demandent à Jerry de garder le secret si elles étaient malades ou traversaient une période difficile, car elles savaient toutes deux que Bénédicte aurait été de suite dans le prochain avion au simple signe que quelque chose « clochait », tant son désir de  protéger ceux qu'elle aimait était fort .

Bénédicte a parcouru le monde sans se soucier des barrières physiques ou culturelles.  Son enthousiasme et sa précipitation ont souvent laissé une petite traînée de chaos dans son sillage dont elle était généralement parfaitement inconsciente. Cela n'a fait qu'ajouter à son charme, ses amis et sa famille aimaient aussi raconter ses savoureuses mésaventures.

Cet aspect de sa personnalité originale contrastait fortement avec les détails et la précision qu'elle appliquait à sa couture, à son encadrement, à sa peinture ou à d'innombrables autres projets artistiques.  Le design de sa nouvelle cuisine et les créations dans son jardin reflètent tous ces talents.

On ne peut pas mentionner la cuisine de Benedicte sans évoquer aussi les nombreuses soirées où elle et Jerry au fil des ans ont rassemblé des multitudes d’amis de toujours dans un tourbillon de danse, de rires et des crus les meilleurs. Bénédicte, l'hôtesse consommée, avait une façon unique de recevoir:  un accueil spécial et un compliment «à la Bénédicte», vous désarmant instantanément par son authenticité. Sans oublier sa façon bien particulière de vous serrer le bras...

Sa famille et ses proches garderont le merveilleux souvenir d’une personnalité unique et aussi attachante qui a désormais pu retrouver Jerry.

Une cérémonie virtuelle aura lieu en son honneur le 23 janvier 2021 à 17H30 (heure de Paris).  Habillez-vous confortablement mais sans insouciance; comme vous le savez tous, une fois sortie de son peignoir Bénédicte était élégante et méticuleuse.
