Hi Betty, Thanks so much for being a wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend for so many years! I learned so much from you when I first studied early American history with you in the 1990s—a long time ago, but I remember those meetings in your smoky 5th floor Faculty office with pleasure. I was so thrilled to be your colleague thereafter—so many good times at BGEAH, with drinks in hand, chatting about history, cats, cricket, and anything else (including your always ordering what seemed like the weirdest meats on the menu!). We always had a laugh. And I watched you ask about gender and other topics in so many of those American history seminars over so many years—it was inspirational, how generative and probing your questions were. And it was always a delight to teach your wonderful scholarship to new students. Through your friendship, I also got to know others like Sylvia Frey, too, and I am so grateful. It was a particular pleasure to return to Cambridge to take up the mantle of teaching good old Paper 22, as well as Part II courses on the American Revolution, in 2013. Cambridge can be such a strange place, and you were always such a cheerful, down-to-earth presence amid it all. And you were such a trail blazer there—so proud to be your friend. We loved visiting with you (and Ruthie) on Chesterton Road, and I am sure you know we are sending many big hugs and lots of love. Sarah xoxo
