We worked on research projects together - one in particular where for two years I commuted from Madison frequently and shared the Lord casa in Tucson. Always good food, wine, and humor - I felt like a family member. On my sabbatical, I stayed in Bill's condo in Boulder and of course he left me his collection of cooking ingredients beyond my comprehension (who needs twenty kinds of vinegar?). Years later, when Bill decided to sell his little Rialta RV, I was the buyer (after he loaned it to me for two different Rocky Mountain vacations in prior years). Bill was so bright and innovative, modest but dogged on occasion, and filled with energy and ideas. Seeing him this past December for wine and recollections and laughs was a wonderful moment. It afforded some closure on a long and warm friendship. He took the occasion to tell me that he no longer drove a car, but that his trike was fitted with a basket that could house a case of wine; practical to the end. He'll be sorely missed, and my condolences go out to his family and loved ones. less

I am writing to offer the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics' sincere condolences on the passing of your father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Although we never met personally, reading his obituary reminded me of the incredible faculty that have come through our department. What an amazing career your father had-in academia and in service to our country. I especially appreciated his work in water resources management; his leadership and the impact he had at WRRC in Arizona built a lasting legacy.
I cannot begin to understand the loss you are feeling, but I do hope you take comfort in your father’s story, his impact in academia and on the natural world that he obviously loved.
In sympathy,
Jeremy Foltz, Chair & Professor
