OBITUARY
Tammie Halloway was born on July 16, 1964, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where she graduated from Riverdale Park High School in 1982. She gave birth to her daughter, Nicole, in 1988 and her son, David, in 1992. Tammie became Tammie Alexander when married the love of her life, Kirk Alexander, on January 27, 1995. She lost her father, James Delmar Halloway, to lung cancer in 2003 and was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in late... see more
Tammie Halloway was born on July 16, 1964, in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where she graduated from Riverdale Park High School in 1982. She gave birth to her daughter, Nicole, in 1988 and her son, David, in 1992. Tammie became Tammie Alexander when married the love of her life, Kirk Alexander, on January 27, 1995. She lost her father, James Delmar Halloway, to lung cancer in 2003 and was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in late 2012. She lived in Mechanicsville, MD until 2018, when she moved with Kirk and David to North Carolina. Tammie died at her home in Havelock, NC on November 19, 2021.
Tammie always loved being a friend, sister (to Donnie), daughter (to Mary & Jim), wife, and mom. Before cancer, she enjoyed shopping, making sales pitches in DC (mostly for the lunches), gardening, going to the beach, listening to classic rock and R&B, rescuing animals, and embarrassing her kids with public displays of affection for her husband.
In the last decade of her life, Tammie indulged in daytime television, junk food, and naps. She remained crazy about her husband and fiercely protective and proud of her kids. She loved spending time with her dog, Sam, and her grand-dog, Luke.
Our family will honor her no-frills and no-spectacles approach to life by not hosting formal services. Instead, we encourage you to share your favorite memories and photos of Tammie/mom on her memorial site. Her life, so interrupted and changed by cancer, can't be captured by us alone; please help us remember every version of Tammie... yes, even the wild one (we know she had quite a life before us!).
I met Tammie the first day of 2nd grade and our teacher separated us the first day of 2nd grade! She is my BB sister for life. I miss you, my heart is broken. More stories and pictures to come..

I always remember peeking around the cubicle to see if she was in when we first arrived! My absolutely favorite memory of her though is being down at the camp getting ready for my wedding and her telling my dad that she really needed to bring you that night because she knew you and Shawn had to meet. The look of pride and smile on her face is something I will cherish and never forget. I will forever be grateful for her bringing you into our lives. Before we finally met, you told me so many times that I absolutely had to meet Nikki. You were always so excited about us and always knew we would end up together. Even through some of the "dumber moments" of my life, you know what I'm talking about, I remember you telling me " I'm not giving up on you and Nikki"!! Sure enough, you were right!
Writing this is so hard because I have too many memories and moments to put into words. Hanging out at the party barn, chilling by the pool, you teaching me how to make the best fried chicken imaginable!
We are just days from thanksgiving and I know we would be putting together the list right now. Thinking about groceries, what sides we will have and of course planning for the leftovers the next day!
I will miss you more than words can describe but I am happy that you are no longer in pain and you are at peace.
I promise you that for the rest of my life I will take care of your baby! less

I enjoyed working with Tammie for many years. I remember the day she first started feeling bad.
Tammie was such a wonderful person anyone who knew her was lucky to know a great lady. She will be truly missed by many.
My mom was 48 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. I was 23 and still living at home. On the day before the emergency surgery to remove the cancered part of her lung (a surgery that as supposed to end the cancer), I tiptoed back to her room. On the day before the emergency surgery to remove the cancered part of her lung (a surgery that as supposed to end the cancer), I tiptoed back to her room. She was sitting up in bed, as she’d done most days since her diagnosis. I sat down beside her. “I got you something.” I handed her a small stuffed elephant, holding a red heart for Valentine’s Day. She squeezed it and set it on the headboard, and I laid my head in her lap. “I’m so scared,” she sobbed. “I know,” I said.
That is still one of the most vivid memories I have of my mom. When we found out the cancer had spread to her brain, becoming Stage IV, I thought I’d lose her quickly. I didn’t know that she’d progressively get worse over time, and that such a slow, subtle deterioration creeps in like a fog and supplants your memories, one joy at a time. I didn’t realize that, by 33, I’d have spent approximately one-third of my life trying to see my mom through the fog.
But once I knew, years ago, I started to write down stories of my mom from before she got sick, knowing I'd need these memories.
One of my favorites is the time she visited me in grad school. My mom was always my #1 fan, supporter, and confidante, and we were genuinely close. But we weren’t yet friends. Mom never sat down, wouldn't let us eat out of containers, and packed the entire house when we went on vacation. But this visit was different -- she came to relax in my space, to be my friend. She showed up Friday night with only an overnight bag and we got food from a gas station. We watched Skins on my futon until 2am and ate ice cream out of the tub. We even left our dirty spoons on the coffee table.
The next day, we decided to take some of our snacks and go for a drive. We drove through the neighborhood behind campus, and I gave a guided tour of my favorite views and funny stuff I’d seen people do in their yards. As I narrated, I ate hot chips, which were so spicy all I could do was keep eating them to stave off the spice. Eventually I was frantically talking and eating chips. She looked over at me and saw tears rolling down my cheeks and my face was red as I shoved more chips in my mouth, crumbs falling everywhere. She had to pull off in front of someone's house because she was laughing so hard. I have no idea why the moment was so funny, but it was, and she was laughing so hard she cried and I was laughing and crying and sniffling and a man who was mowing the lawn she’d partially pulled off into shook his head at us, and she gave him the finger.
I have some good memories of her after she got sick, too, and I'm eternally grateful for that. I have memories of her teaching Shawn how to make the meal I always asked her to make for my birthday. Every phone call that started with "Hey, baby." Her playing the same two songs by Amy Winehouse on repeat from her laptop. Stories she finally told me about her wild teenage years. Stories she told me about me as a baby. Her calling my dog her "grand-dog," and saying "I love him" every time I told her he did something bad.
I am so lucky that I got to have a mom who was fierce and brave and loved me as much at my worst as she did at my best. I will miss my mom forever, but I know how much I meant to her and how much she loved me. I know having me changed her life and how she lived it. I know she talked about how proud she was of me all the time. I hope she knows how proud I am of her, how much I talk about her to my friends, how much I love her.

You treated me like one of your kids and I will forever be grateful. I loved being a part of your family. I knew if did something wrong I would get scolded by you. I’m pretty sure you pulled the first and middle name on me too, just like you did for Nikki and David.
You were an amazing mother. You always supported and encouraged mine and Nikki’s crazy ideas. I know we definitely pushed your limits over the years. I have a ton but I will just share my favorites.
For Nikki’s fifth grade graduating party we wanted to create a new drink. We mixed grape and strawberry kook-aid and called it strape. You helped us make a sign for our new creation.
Nikki and I were obsessed with making our notebooks. We’d spend hours creating new pages, then proudly show them to you. You always encouraged us to keep it us. By the time I moved my junior year we had 6 different books.
You and Kirk went to a concert one night, leaving Nikki and David home alone. They had strict instructions that no one was allowed over but to call my mom if anything happened. At some point I came over to help Nikki cook pizza, she was a terrible cook. I left before you got home. You knew I was there immediately when you saw the pizza boxes by your trash can because you knew Nikki couldn’t cook. No one got in trouble.
Nikki and I got the bright idea to sneak out of the house at night and take a walk around County Lakes. We did this a few times. We thought we were so smart and sly. You knew! The entire time! You just let us do it because you knew we were good kids just doing something we thought was fun.
We did really stupid things all the time thinking you’d never find out. You always knew but you didn’t tell us until later. You let us be us.
I have a picture somewhere of you and Kirk in the kitchen being cute. It is probably my favorite picture of you two. You both had shitty grins most likely because Kirk made some sexual joke and you shut him down in a sarcastic way. You two had so much love for each other. You were always goofy and displayed pda no matter who was around. I am thankful that I was able to witness your relationship.
I am happy you were able to meet James and one of my kiddos. I think you were actually the first person to watch Priscilla for a little. I still remember when I posted my sonogram of Priscilla. You commented that you were crying. Happy tears.
I will always cherish my memories of you. I will do my best to remind Nikki of all the fun times and be here for her for whatever she needs. I love you and I will miss you. less

Our visit after not seeing each other for so long was just as normal as it was back in our wild days in Riverdale (like we never missed a beat). She got on a kick of cleaning the house ALL THE TIME. While our visit she kept pulling out the vacuum, making another pot of coffee, cleaning the tables, etc. I finally had to tell her to sit her butt down - drove her crazy not doing something - I blamed it all on the coffee All the while she was doing this, my daughter and Nikki were playing with some paint spin game and paint was everywhere.
