Sonia was born in McAllen, Texas to Humberto and Lydia Rangel. She often spoke of their love and enduring crushes on each other and how it created a person who leads with love in all areas of her life. She was a brilliant photographer with a unique ability to capture the artistry and beauty in seemingly insignificant moments. She went to Texas State Univeristy for Photography and Health and Wellness Promotion. She dedicated her life to helping people achieve better health and to advocacy for children, marginalized communities, and the underprivileged- leaving behind hundreds of children, families, and people whose voices she helped to find who have been touched by her kindness. Even in her final hours, she was with her beloved partner of 10 years, Cheryl, sharing her gifts, teaching yoga.
Sonia was a leader who we all looked to for guidance, humor, and her uncanny ability to reframe things positively. Sonia was loved as immeasurably as she loved others. She loved Cheryl, Beth, and Josh so much she teared up mentioning them. She admired her mother and family so much she beamed even saying their names. She was a person overflowing with beauty, love, and compassion for others.
Please, use this space to remember and honor our goofy, loving, bright, powerful Sonia and all the goodness she brought to our world.
Sonia threw a birthday party for Josh the Thursday before she passed. We had such a great time. She made wonton soup from scratch. She was the best! ❤️
