The family of Sandie Friar Tolstad sadly share the news that Sandie passed away in her sleep after suffering a stroke, on September 9, 2019. Sandie, 56, was living in South Lake Tahoe with her husband, Lee Tolstad at the time of her passing. We are grieving the loss of a mother, wife, sister, friend, artist, musician, cowgirl, and spiritual sage. Sandie was a free spirit, an old soul, and an unforgettable woman.
Sandra Susan Friar was born March 27, 1963 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, to Woodrow and Edda Friar, the third of their four children. Sandie grew up in Lompoc, where she attended Lompoc High School, raised her own three children, developed deep and lasting friendships, and cultivated her artistic and musical gifts. Sandie participated in several “mural in a day” events and designed and painted a beautiful mural with an underwater theme for the Village Country Club pool area.
Sandie is survived by her husband, Lee Tolstad of South Lake Tahoe; sons Cory Smith of Lompoc, Zachary Smith (Jessica) of Utah, and daughter Amanda Smith (Chris Haupt) of Lompoc. Sandie was a proud Grandma to Rex and Rosie Smith, and to Christopher Haupt Jr. Sandie is also survived by her sister Lina Bickel (Tom), and brothers Woodrow “Sonny” Friar (Tina), and Jerry Friar (Michelle) and she was “cool Aunt Sandie” to eight nieces and nephews. Sandie also leaves behind Terry Smith of Lompoc, who is father to her three children, and Rick Jones, her second husband, as well as countless friends and admirers. Sandie was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow D. Friar Jr. and Edda Friar.
A celebration of Sandie’s life will be held Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Ken Adam Park picnic area from 1-4 PM in Lompoc, CA. We invite all who knew and loved Sandie to join us in sharing memories, music, art and laughter. Sandie was a hippie at heart who loved tie-dye patterns and Jimi Hendrix, so it would be appropriate to honor her memory by dressing accordingly and colorfully, and bringing your musical instruments if you desire.
