Rawin Chong was more than just a brother to his two surviving siblings, Vanda and Ronald, he was a brother to his family, friends, neighbors, and community. He was also a son, nephew, cousin, and neighbor who will always be missed and loved. He was loyal, he was protective, he was kind and considerate, one of the toughest guys with a soft heart, and you could always count on him to be there. He was the oldest of our family being second generation Chinese American, the first to be born in America after his late mother immigrated to the US with his late grandmother. He was super scholarly, went to Lowell High, then to UC Berkeley, then onto Syracuse for his Masters. He chose to live a simple life, loved fixing bikes, collecting vintage stereo equipment, and worked all his life in SF from working at the bar and movie theater to teaching kids chess, and had his favorite coffee shop at Simple Pleasures Cafe in the Richmond district. He made a positive impact on so many people's lives including his family, neighborhood friends, and the kids who he taught chess. He fought off Stage IV lung cancer for 15 months. He was taken away too soon. He will always be loved and missed by all. His spirit lives on through the sunsets at ocean beach, the wind rustling through the craggy cypress trees by Land's End, and the distant sound of waves from Seal Rock Drive. You will always be remembered and loved by all. Rest In Peace.
