Nancy Ann Aitken
March 3, 1942 - November 21, 2020
Nancy was born on March 3, 1942 to Mabel and Charles O’Donnell on Mare Island, CA. The oldest of three children to include Lenny and Kathleen O’Donnell. Nancy is survived by her three children Charlie, Philip and Tony Aitken, grandchildren Mari and Brendan Aitken, sister Kathleen O'Donnell and cousin Helen Thompson.
For fifty years, Nancy owned and operated Busy Bee Childhood Development Center in Midtown Sacramento. In that time her love of children shaped countless lives through her work with kids and parents alike. She made the world a better place.
Nancy will be missed by all who knew her. She was always popular and brave. She was a person who was able to just be herself, and in that comfort she gave the rest of us permission to be ourselves too.
If you go looking for Nancy in the afterlife, check first where the happy kids are playing.

It is true, as people say, that she made the world a better place, in so many ways I can think of. Since her passing I have been reflecting on some ways in which I am a better person for having known Nancy and her beautiful family. My heart goes out to Phil and Kim, Dutch and Paloma, Kathy, Tony, Mari, and Rosy, and all of you whose lives lovely Nancy touched. less

My children worked for her and learned so much about how to be with children. Nancy truly loved what she did. She enjoyed being with the children and helped so many parents who were struggling. Her idea of fun on the week-end was to go to garage sales to look for toys, books or games for Busy Bee. She was one of the most generous people I know. She provided free week-end or evening child care for a young medical resident trying to take care of a baby and if people lost their job and couldn't pay the tuition she'd tell them to just come in on the week-end and help with clean-up or painting. We went on vacations together. I have such happy memories of Nancy with my family in Italy. I used to call her My Nancy because she was my person whom
I truly loved. We would go to dinner and a movie most week-ends. Her passing leaves a big hole in my heart. less
Nancy was my schoolmate and friend. We kept in touch with school reunions and business dealings. We will all miss her. My husband and myself give our sincere condolences to her family.

I donβt know if you remember me but you knew me as Miss Yvonne. I worked for your mom at Busy Bee from 1971 to 1976 as a teacher for the three-year-olds after I graduated with my AA in ECE.
I saw her again as she frequented our restaurant, Eddieβs on Broadway.
I caught up with her again in 2019 at The Chateau. My husband Eddie and I picked her up and our friend, Tom in June 2019 who was also staying at The Chateau having dinner at Cafeteria 15 L with the picture attached.
I last texted her in April, 2020 to see how she was doing and at that time she was visiting at Tonyβs. Your mom was so special being my first Boss. Iβll always have fond memories of your mom. Prayers and please Take Care.

She was immediately a smiling, genuine, happy landlady and neighbor, and quickly evolved into a loving surrogate grandmother figure. Now our daughter attends Busy Bee and, while she doesn't get to know Nancy, she is growing in the beautiful learning environment that Nancy created. We are so grateful to have known her, and we miss her dearly. less

In each shot you're able to capture Nancy's beautiful spirit beaming through that bright smile. Not only has Nancy been a mentor to me she was one of the kindest people I know. In the early years of my ECE career there were countless times I witnessed her extend charity and comfort to children, families, neighbors and staff. She seemed to instinctively sense when an extra serving of love and support was needed. And then there were the spontaneous moments of "gifting", just because. She was an incredible role model for me and her inspiring, common sense approach to working with young children was my guiding light as I left Busy Bee and continued a 40 year journey in early childhood education. What a joy it was to reconnect with her when my grandchildren enrolled at Busy Bee. Blessings to the current staff that have honored her philosophy as they carry the torch in her absence. Condolences also to Charlie, Philip, Tony, and Kathy and their families. less

During that time, we got to know Nancy quite well. She was a wonderful, remarkable woman. In the morning, she was often reading books to the kids or playing right on the floor with them. She was energetic and youthful; she seemed decades younger than what she was. The children were her joy. I always admired her passion and love for children. She left a lasting impression on all of us. Even though my kids are no longer at Busy Bee, each time we drive by it my kids always point out, βThereβs Busy Bee!β We love you Nancy, you will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Ps: my kiddo (11 years old now) and I had the great fortune of seeing her at the movies last winter! We had hoped to go visit her in #605... less
