Monica Rose McGovern was a very loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who left this world peacefully on August 26th 2021, after a long struggle with diabetes and a very short battle with ovarian cancer.
Monica was blessed to be surrounded by her family the last couple of months, weeks and days, as she faced her end of life with profound grace and courage.
Monica existed as the rock and cornerstone for her 12 descendants and community, all while suffering under so much pain from her ailments and consequent physical disabilities. She was tired, yet she pushed through for as long as she could.
Monica loved children and she was a natural caretaker.
Monica grew up in Nelson B.C. and was the oldest daughter in her family. She looked after of her four younger siblings.
After moving to the Vancouver mainland area, she raised her three daughters on her own as a single mom, all while returning to college, and afterwards working full time.
Monica worked for many years as a counsellor for Project Parent, provided parenting education, counselling, support and advocacy for families. In the evenings she ran a weekly single mother’s support group. She also worked in residential care settings for people with developmental disabilities.
When her failing health required her to retire, she continued to volunteer for ACORN, advocating for better housing and wages for the underprivileged, and focusing on other social justice issues.
Monica’s home was always open to friends and family in need. Many young people stayed and benefited from her emotional support and advice. She had also spent many years raising her grandchildren.
Monica’s selfless compassion for others is exceptionally reflected in her life’s work. The affect that she had on so many lives is widely felt and appreciated. Monica had an incredibly rare and precious empathetic heart.
She can now rest.
Our family and community is feeling a very great loss with her passing.
We know she's finally at peace and in company of her loved one's passed.
The greatest tribute is knowing that she gave her life to those around her.
She loved and was loved. She will be forever missed.
