Miguel Uría was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 22, 1965, the oldest of five siblings. Miguel was always a brilliant young man, who excelled in all he set before him - academically, athletically, and socially. He was a star basketball player throughout his childhood, and upon entering college, he supplied similar skill to Crew, a sport which sparked his eventual passion for sailing. He found himself permanently a member of the Honor Roll, which precipitated his acceptance into Georgetown University, where he studied Political Science, and eventual attendance of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, where he attained his MBA.
Miguel had an adventurous spirit, which inspired him to travel across the world to Taipei, where he learned Mandarin Chinese, far before doing so was in vogue. He spent several years in Taiwan and traveling throughout Southeast Asia before returning for business school.
Following his graduation from Wharton, Miguel entered the field of finance and investment banking, a career which eventually carried him to the Bay Area, the place he loved most in the world. Not only was he professionally successful in San Francisco, but his life was full of love and friendship. Miguel cast his net wide, always ready to share in a laugh, an outdoors adventure, or, famously, in a passionately-viewed Saints game with anyone he met.
Miguel also sought opportunities to serve. The organization that most dearly held his heart was Larkin Street Youth Services, a non-profit dedicated to providing assistance and services to the large community of minors and other youth suffering homelessness in San Francisco. His was a big heart, and when he devised lists of life goals to guide his path, he always included the desire to dedicate more time to service and, in particular, to Larkin Street.
Miguel has joined his brother Fernando in heaven. He is survived by a multitude of friends and family, and, in particular, his mother Maria Elena Hidalgo, his stepmother Michelle Uría, and his sisters Elena, Isabella, and Alejandra Uría. We will miss him forever.
"You know that place between sleep and awake; that place where you can still remember dreaming? That's where I will always love you. That's where I will be waiting."
