This was one of Margie’s favorite phrases, spoken often in the office. Sometimes she tried to put on a tough face, but Margie was, ironically, the most giving and loyal person I’ve met. Don’t get me wrong, Margie could swear like a sailor and drub a person into the ground if they crossed her. Most of her colorful energy was reserved for traffic and national banks. But most of that spirited temperament was dwarfed by her compassion for people in need.
People on the outs, strangers, clients who were out on a proverbial ledge --- Margie helped them. Margie took time, with an amazing mix of empathy and straight talk. Margie just knew how to talk to people. Many of my old clients have told me how great Margie was. When she was still with us, I always passed those feelings along to her. She would say something like, “oh she needs to get a grip.” This was the paradox of Margie. She knew she was helping people but resisted tarnishing her tough exterior. She also didn’t put up with “bullshit.” In her way, she made people tell her the truth. She also had a fantastic sense of humor. I can hear her laughing right now. She was great.
Did I mention she was loyal? To a fault. I am quite certain she was very close to punching someone (who insulted me) in the face right in the middle of a party full of lawyers. She told me a story where, about 45 years ago, she did punch a teacher in the face for insulting her daughter. Of course she was arrested. Ha! That was the way she always wanted to be. Margie stood up for the people she liked. She was more than a friend --- she was my mama bear.
Margie was a truly interesting person. With artful language and imagery, Margie told incredible stories about her life adventures. I am not able to do justice to the stories, but here are some nuggets: The time her ex-husband made her strip naked in the woods at gunpoint and left her there to fend for herself (Margie had stolen his “property”). The times she would gamble all night and sneak home before anyone knew she was gone, putting clothes in the oven to warm them up. Getting air in a friend’s Jaguar on 16th street under the overpass. Telling a bank teller the most egregious insult I’ve ever heard, but without threatening her. When she was a girl, her dad twisted the head off of a mouse that scared her. Her mother threw pebbles at a police officer in protest. Each of these stories took at least 20 minutes to tell, full of emotion and fascination and detail. I wish I had recorded them all.
In the 20 years I knew her, I only saw Margie cry twice. Once when she heard a real story about a person who was selfless and kind. The other when she was worried about Troy. I feel that it is safe to say that Margie loved Troy more than anyone else, ever in her life. She was fiercely protective of Troy. She dedicated her life to Troy, his up-bringing, his well-being, his education, and his support. She was his champion.
Margie was a unique and funny woman, who would probably characterize herself as a “realist.” Even her views on mortality were practical. “You’ve gotta die sometime. No reason to get all uppity about it.” I miss her already. less

rememberring Aunt Margie was loving kind and compassionate. I live in another state and I will never forget we lost our dog in sacramento she took the time to check the sacramento pond to see if she was there, I did ask her to check she just did.
