Katherine was born on August 12, 1959 in Los Angeles, California to Bernice and Henry Kane. She was received into her parents home as the 6th of what would be 16 sisters and brothers. Known as KK and Katy, she was a fun, but responsible youth who enjoyed sewing, dancing, swimming, crafts and learning at school and at home.
Katy learned French and briefly worked as a teacher's assistant before she married and started a family with childhood friend, Eric Hunter. She welcomed her first child into the world at age 20, a daughter Dalena Hunter, followed by daughter Erin two years later, and son Nathaniel, three years later. Katherine raised her family in Los Angeles with the help of longtime partner Jerome Patton. She made many lifelong friends as close as family. Her unfailingly generous hospitality made her so special because she was a constant comfort and refuge for her loved ones throughout her entire life. Katy loved to cook and bake most of all. She endeared herself to her family through generously presenting her gift of world-class pies and other sweets, and smiles and laughter which could be argued was an even sweeter experience than the baked treats.
Katherine Hunter-Hinman lived a life of resilience, grace, dignity and faith through many formidable obstacles. The lessons and good will she shared with her loved ones and friends will forever be a prized memory. She is survived by her husband, Freddrick Hinman, two daughters and one son, and one granddaughter, Leyla Hunter.
Sister Hunter-Hinman is a powerful Christlike example of humility meekness and love. I will cherish that memory of her. My condolences to the family. God Bless each of you.
I will always remember Katherine as a woman with a big heart and a big smile. She would frequently write small notes and letters to express appreciation and love for others.

A few years ago she spoke in church and I was so surprised by her conviction, intelligence and confidence. "This is a woman I want to get to know!"
Little did I know there was so much more to love and learn from Katherine Hunter Hinman.
Her bright mind took in details concerning most any subject and I witnessed how wisely
and thoroughly she helped others with good her advise.
She did not seem to ever tire in well doing.
When local free produce was available at the church building, I watched Katherine carefully call her neighbors, shop for them and then load heavy grocery bags into her car to deliver to them.
And when the Watts Labor Action Committee needed help bagging food, Fred and Katherine were there, working HARD to do more than their share of work.
I worried about her health and stamina but she just kept going!
I learned first hand that she was a master baker. Her corn bread was amazing and she gave us a pound cake that I still crave.
I remember cousin KK wearing a beautiful flower in her hair, sometimes colorful beads. I remember coming to the fish fry’s. Playing with Dalena and Erin and Nate. She was giving, always smiling and welcoming to all just like Nana. I will be... moreI remember cousin KK wearing a beautiful flower in her hair, sometimes colorful beads.
