His life started in a small village Vazhiyur. He was the youngest in his family with one elder brother and three elder sisters. Though farming was their family’s occupation, he took all the effort to graduate and get into a government job. He was the pride of his village Vazhiyur, for being one of the first graduates.
In a world where bribe is so common in government jobs, he stood as a role model throughout his career, not taking a single penny as bribe. He garnered huge respect amongst his colleagues for his honesty. He managed to lead a good life and give all the happiness to his wife and sons. My athai should have accumulated a lot of good karma in her previous birth to get a husband like my uncle. He literally carried her in a golden plate. They were a wonderful couple and had a successful and happy married life for 45 years.
He ensured to give the best life and education to his sons, making his elder son a MBA graduate and the younger son a Dentist. He was always proud of his sons’ accomplishments and enjoyed praising about their success in career. He never wanted to stand against his sons’ wishes - always been a pillar of support. Even when both of them decided to choose their own life partners, he blessed them whole heartedly and conducted their weddings. That’s how I came into his family and he always ensured to give us a lot of freedom and live our life the way we wanted it. My children are blessed to have a loving grandfather like him and I’m glad they are born with some of his good qualities - using the words shared by my sister at this juncture - “My uncle has left behind all his goodness with his grand children.. Bundle of joy - Rahul ; Loaded with Patience - Aditya ; Composed and Mature - Akshya. Uncle has not gone anywhere.. He's with us, he's with all these beautiful kids 🙏Long live his legacy 🙏. Veezndhalam vidhaayagum tharunam 🙏” . Such a beautiful dedication and a true fact. His grandchildren are carrying his legacy.
He had a beautiful bonding with his sons. He was not only their father but also their best friend, philosopher and guide. My husband loved him the most in this entire world - to be honest, at times I have also been jealous at the love my hubby showered on his dad. I’ve heard many stories from my husband about the happy or the troubled times at childhood and in all those stories, his dad was his greatest strength. Though he will be greatly missed by my husband, he has left so many wonderful memories to cherish.
My uncle also taught us to respect elders - mainly when his elder brother was alive, he always ensured to give him “Mudhal Mariyadhai” in all important occasions. He also supported his sisters and paid all due respects. His family has a huge respect for him and we have all learnt to respect our elders from him.
The grief that we all carry by his loss is immeasurable. We all cried to the Gods, unable to fathom the reality and for taking him so early , but my daughter reminded all of us to cherish his memories and think about his love and affection - Life May end but his Memories Lives Forever. His soul is still lingering in this world , watching and walking beside us. So let us learn to CELEBRATE HIS LIFE and relive every moment through the EVERLASTING WONDERFUL MEMORIES!!! less

Within a few years they came home, with little Kiruba! He was this charming cute boy, I remember carrying him to a nearby petti kadai ( mom and pop shop) to buy some candies. Karunakaran uncle, always found time to come to all festivities in our house, he did not miss even one event, including my clinic inauguration at Karur in 1989.
I could not reciprocate as much as he did to visit his family functions.
He will always stay in our hearts! RIP 🙏 less

When I was informed of the sad demise of Mr Karunakaran I could only experience shock and disbelief. It took me a whole day to reconcile myself to the reality that he is no more. He was a quiet unassuming person, a man of few words. I had been seeing him from Anitha’s marriage on wards. He belonged to a generation who spoke little but commanded respect by their very presence.
When I met him during Shruti’s marriage, I spent a few minutes with him. He told me about the legends Ranjani and Gayatri coming to their house etc. There was joy and pride in his voice. I could visualise them instantly with his family. I did not say anything but silently shared his feelings of happiness. I wondered how many people are lucky enough to have such close acquaintances !! RG have elevated classical music to a new level. Never imagined that he will depart so soon.
As a parent he enabled his children to have good education and good married life. He was good and courteous to all. According to me that is what counts in life. Our heartfelt condolences to you, Dr Jayakaran and all the family members. We offer our prayers to the Almighty to bestow peace and tranquility to the departed soul.
With our best wishes.... TGR and TRV Bengaluru 24 Sep 2020 less

“My grandfather’s legacy and the some of the memories that I had with him :
Life has changed before my eyes after the death of my beloved grandfather. The only emotion I felt toward that news that day was shock. I didn’t know what to think and how to react, but I knew one thing I had to be strong for the rest of the family. Even though he will not be with us physically, his memories will always be with us. He was so optimistic and always smiling, and I never saw that go away from him.
I had so many wonderful memories with my grandfather each one filled with more joy than the last one. I didn’t know it then, but now looking back I realized that I need to look at things in life positively and smile and laugh and live my life to the fullest. My grandfather was a role model in that sense for everybody. Looking back at the picture and seeing it closely, I am able to see that whenever he was next to my dad and his wife or even his grandchildren, you could really see them smiling a lot. There was another example, whenever it was mine or anybody’s birthday he would put together a little video montage of just a few pictures. It was so sweet of him to do that. He always was sweet in asking me if I need anything for my birthday and I would always say nothing, but he would still gift me something nice, whether it be a dress or jewel or something memorable. He looked after me, my brother, and cousin as not only grandchildren but as his children and he would always take us to the park and let us play. He would make us sleep in the afternoon but in the end we would wait till he slept, so we could sneak out the room and go play with each other. What these memories that are mentioned in the essay have taught me one thing, which is that love and affection is one of the key things in life.
One thing that it has taught me is that life may never be the same when you lose a loved one but that doesn’t mean that you cannot let it get better. It also taught me that love and affection that you have towards family is what is going to get you through the toughest time. Which is exactly what I did. I became the pillar of strength for the entire family and counseling anybody who needed it the most. I will also be able to look back on the memories and be so proud of the legacy that my grandfather has left behind.” less
