Joe Edmond Shumake, beloved husband, father, and Papa, of Wake Village, Texas departed from his earthly home on November 19, 2022, at the age of 81 years old.

Joe was born on February 6, 1941 in Dalby Springs, Texas to Thomas Edward and Lizia Mealy Moore Shumake. He was a member of First Baptist Church Wake Village, TX, and he retired from Day and Zimmerman after a 41 year career. Joe was a veteran of the United States Army, the Texas National Guard, and the United States Army Reserves where he served his country for 28 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Lizia Shumake, and three brothers, Billy Shumake, Jimmy Shumake, and Nolan Shumake.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Charlotte Shumake of Wake Village, TX; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Julie Shumake of Cypress, TX; one daughter, Jennifer Gray of Paragould, AR; six adored grandchildren, Hannah Shumake, Abby Stevens, Hope Shumake, Blake Shumake, Colton Stevens, and Addie Grace Stevens; two sisters, Anna Mae “Sucky” Tidwell of DeKalb, TX and Betty Sue Meadows of Dekalb, TX; and numerous additional beloved family and friends. 

Joe was a wonderful man who worked hard and loved people. He was a servant of the Lord who liked to work behind the scenes, and he never did anything for accolades or attention. He worked hard and he loved big. He definitely loved his family. He was especially proud to be Papa to six grandchildren who always knew that if Papa was around that they would have donuts for breakfast. Joe loved to laugh and to make people laugh. His favorite question was, “Would you like some pie or cake? It’ll make you good looking like me.” He loved life and taught us that people are always more important than things and to never sweat the small stuff. He will be deeply missed, but we are grateful for the example that he provided to us.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on November 22, 2022 at his home church, First Baptist Church Wake Village, Texas. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
