Joan Simpson, aged 99, passed away on May 11, 2022, at The Retreat in Loganville, Georgia. She was born Joan Sellwood in Southfield, England, not far from London, to Edward and Bertha Sellwood in 1923. She was the eldest of the three Simpson children. At age 16 she moved to London and worked at a haberdashery.
She served at the Air Ministry in during World War 2. In 1948, while living in Ireland, she married Royal Marine Hugh Edward Alexander Simpson. They followed Hugh’s assignment to Berchtesgaden, Germany before eventually returning to London. In 1952, the family immigrated to the United States. The family lived in and around New York City for the next 50 years.
Hugh and Joan had three children, Marilynne Jean (daughter), Hugh Edward Alexander, Jr. (son), and Robert William (son). In 1962, Hugh passed away and Ms. Simpson raised her children by herself and held up to three jobs at a time to provide for them. She landed a job working for the New York Times in Times Square and remained there for 30 years. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America on June 16th, 1993.
Ms. Simpson moved to Loganville, Georgia, in 2017 after the death of her long-time friend Nicholas Raymonde. In Georgia, she resided with her son Robert and his wife, Sarah (nee Roberts) Simpson until they passed away earlier this year. Ms. Simpson is survived by her sister, Beryl (nee Simpson) Sawyer and her daughter Marilynne (nee Simpson) Orlando. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
