James Henry Guthrie, was born to Opal Marie English on August 11, 1930. James was beloved husband to Elizabeth Ann Lain for 66 years. Father to Larry, Barry, Bruce and Mindy. Grandpa to Jaden and Jenna. Friend to everyone that met him. He knew where and when the fish were biting. James was a member of Winnsboro Church of Christ and was a servant to many where ever he lived. With a smile on his face, he always had a story or joke and offered words of wisdom to any that needed it. He loved fishing at his ones or under the bridge at Bob Sandlin. If you needed a fish fry, he was your man. He loved his kids unconditionally even when he had to bail us out later for the paths we took. His love for Elizabeth was unending. He never said no to her and took care of her each day until Alzheimer’s took that from him. He loved her cooking and always said it had a “more-ish” taste because he wanted more. He sat through tennis tournaments in the South Texas heat to watch Jenna play and smiled the whole way through Jaden’s ballet when she had the leading roll. He was Mindy’s number one fan as he help a huge camcorder on his shoulders at MPHS football games with a large pin on his baseball cap that said, “ I’m a cheerleader’s dad”. He could fix anything that was broken and kept a cool head when life was in crisis. James will be missed but his love for his family, friends and church will be felt for years to come. We love you, James, daddy, grandpa.
James donated his body to science at UT Southwestern. Family will celebrate his life privately on Friday, November 26, 2021.

Laughter and joy was with us, as James made me try his "not at all spicy" vegetables for barbecues. His "morish" word for Liz' wonderful food is still used here with us. He taught me to drive, I even had to try his rifle, and we had wonderful conversations about his life in Germany in the US Army. He was so full of love for his children and Liz, and he was sparkling with funny stories. Everybody just was dearly in love with him immediately. I was the happiest exchange student in Mt. Pleasant spending it with the Guthries.
Lots of love from Germany! less
