Hedwig K Witschorek (nee Klingenberg) passed away peacefully at home in Caseyville, Illinois on May 13th, 2020 after having a stroke and battling fiercely with dementia, a crippling disease, dreadful for a woman with such a strong mind and will.
She was born on December 2, 1925 and came to America from Germany after WWII. She lived briefly in St. Louis, MO, then spent most of her years in Fairview Heights, IL
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her brother, Bernhard Klingenberg and sister Gertrude Pohl of Germany.
She enjoyed traveling to visit Germany and is survived by two sisters, Hilde Shutz of Germany and Erica. She was the most loving mother to her daughter, Karen Smith (nee Witschorek) of Peoria, IL and Wolfgang of Caseyville, IL. She helped raise her grandchildren, Kimberly Smith of Peoria, IL, Kevin Smith of Bloomingdale, Il, Jeanne Norris (nee Witschorek) of Columbia, IL. and great grandchildren Madison Norris of Missouri and Quintin Norris of Columbia, IL. Her most recent great grandchild, Everdeen Smith of Bloomingdale, IL will miss her as well.
She was an exceptional caregiver giving most of her life to the care of her husband, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her sisters-in-law.
If you needed or wanted something and she could make it happen, she did.
She was an outstanding gardener and homemaker. She briefly worked at Scruples, a clothing store that was in the Twin Towers mall in the 1980’s.
She was very frugal and would be upset that any money was “wasted” on flowers or publishing any obituary so contributions can be made here in lieu of flowers.
Private graveside services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairview Heights, IL.
