As the youngest of thirteen kids, Felix was well taken care of and some may even say โspoiledโ for a young country boy at that time. As the youngest of thirteen kids, Felix was well taken care of and some may even say โspoiledโ for a young country boy at that time. He grew up spending his time farming, playing basketball, and going to church. He professed a love for Christ and was baptized as a preteen at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Felix graduated from Fayette County Training School (Fayette-Ware) in Somerville, Tennessee. It was here that he first started courting his wife Ida M. (Franklin) McGhee.ย Felix worked in the high school cafeteria and would send Ida ice-cream and other treats.ย On May 22, 1963 they united in holy matrimony and to their union three sons were born Felix Andre, Marcus, and Tobias. Felix was a participant of The Great Migration, moving his wife and son from Tennessee to the Big Windy City-Chicago.
ย Felix was first ordained as a Deacon at Holy Cross M.B.C., Chicago, IL where he served for decades.ย He later moved his membership to Garden of Prayer M.B.C. (Broadview, IL) under the leadership of Pastor Johnnie R. Haynie. At Garden of Prayer, he not only served as a Deacon, but was also a member of the Senior Choir and the Nutrition Ministry until his health failed. He loved his church and his church family, but the kitchen and the Nutrition Ministry held a special place in his heart.ย
Felix worked at R. & B. (Ralph and Bill) gas station for a short period of time but spent the majority of his working career as a mechanic at Avis Car Rental (Oโhare). He retired after 38 years of employment. He had received many awards during his career; one he was most proud of was his Gold Veteranโs Badge. This Badge was awarded to him from The Grand Lodge of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 701 for his 35 years (now 50) years of loyalty and service.
Felix was not a man of many words, unless he was praying during devotion; but when he spoke you felt his sincerity.ย He was truly a giver at heart; often giving his time, talents and other resources to help another. For many years he served as his neighborhood mechanic, doing all he could to keep peopleโs cars safe and road ready.ย When he was not serving another, one may find him watching reruns of old westerns, reading the newspaper or bible, sleeping or eating. Whether one affectionately knew him as โPops,โ โBig Dan,โ โPapa Loโ or simply โDeac.โ He truly made an impact on the lives of those around him.ย
Felix made his transition on June 23rd at Loyola University Hospital Maywood, IL. He is preceded in death by daughter Yolanda Fields, son Felix Andre; his parents, Papa Mose and Mama Sandy; siblings: John, Sarah, Zula, Mary, Catherine, Howard, Ralph, and Geraldine.
His love will continue on through his wife Ida M.; children: Michael Toney, Marcus, and Tobias (Lavita); grandchildren: LaTour, Jasmine, Marcia, Jackson, Marcus, Jeremiah, Tobias Jr., Michelle, Kevin; great grandchildren: Destiny, Lamear, Aaden, Noah, Camiila, and Jordan; siblings: Emmitt, Earnest (Maudree), Billy (Angela); and a host of brother and sister in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
