Dr. Janice Coleman was the first child born to John and Beatrice in
Winston-Salem in 1936. She attended the Forsyth County Public Schools and
graduated from Atkins High School in 1955. Her family attended New Bethel
Baptist Church where she was also a member of the senior choir.

After high school, Janice enrolled at Hampton University and graduated with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education. She returned home and
began her career as a nurse practitioner for the hospital that was built to
treat African-Americans in the 1950s, Kate Biting Reynolds Memorial
Hospital. After years of dedicated service working in Forsyth county
hospitals and nursing homes, her desire for teaching led her to
Winston-Salem State University's School of Nursing as an Associate
Professor. She furthered her education by receiving a Masters Degree in
Nursing Education from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a
Doctoral of Nursing Education Degree from the University of North Carolina
Greensboro. Dr. Coleman was a proud member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority
and Sigma Theta Tau – Gamma Zeta Chapter. She retired from WSSU after 31
years of dedicated service. Some of her community and service connections
included: course coordinator for maternal Child Health Nursing; chaired
the nursing division's curriculum and Academic Standards Committee; class
chairperson for the Alumni Fund Drive for the school of Nursing at the
University of North Carolina; was member of the Health Care advisory
committee for Family Services Inc and a member of the state-wide Advisory
Committee on curriculum at the University of North Carolina

She was preceded in death by: her husband Joe, her parents John and
Beatrice, her sister Katherine (Jack) and her brother John (Heidi). She
leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Kenneth (Denene), Terri (Jerry)
and Karen (Daryl) ; grandchildren Jon, Michael, Kwamoore, Darryl, Korey,
Kamirah, Kari, and Dimanih; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and
friends.
