LTC Alberto S. Rubio MD, 95, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2020. He was the husband of the late Jeannette (Garceau) Rubio. Born in Peru, he was the son of the late Victor and Vicelina (Rodriquez) Rubio. Dr. Rubio graduated from University San Marcos Lima, Peru in 1957 as an M.D. He worked at the San Marco’s University Medical Faculty and had a private practice for two years prior to moving to the U.S. He interned for pathology at McKennan Hospital, South Dakota. This led him to pathology residencies at Albany Medical Center, NY; RI Hospital, RI; Springfield Hospital, MA (fellowship); and Montreal Queen Elizabeth, Canada.
In 1968, he returned to RI and continued a successful career at RI Medical Center General Hospital as senior pathology physician for 16 years. He was licensed and board certified in Forensic Medicine, a board certified Medical Examiner, a board certified Psychotherapist and carried an MD license in RI and Florida. He was proud to serve in the 455th US Army General Hospital as an internist, general surgeon, and lab specialist until his retirement in 1993 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves.
He was a longtime fraternity member of the Freemasons where he was affectionately known as “Doc” and achieved Past Master naming him Worshipful Alberto Rubio. Within the Freemasons, he belonged to the former King Solomon Lodge #11 F. & A.M., merging with Hamilton Lodge #15 in 2006 and now both under the scope of Manchester Lodge #12. Doc also belonged to the Veterans only based, Overseas Lodge #40. He was a member of the concordant bodies of Freemasonry such as, Scottish Rite Valley of Providence, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the RI Shriners, formerly Palestine Marhaba Shrine Club, of which he was a member of the Artisan and the Directors Units. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #15 in East Greenwich and the 100 Club in Providence, RI.
Dr. Alberto Rubio married Jeannette Garceau in 1962 and mourned her passing in 1997. They had three beautiful daughters Jeannette (Rubio) Jutras, Nancy (Rubio) Toevs, and Dorothy (Rubio) Chobanian. He was beloved by his grandchildren Edward Rubio, Rene Jutras, Elizabeth (Wudtke) Hannan, Michael Wudtke, Nicole Jutras, and Madison Wudtke who affectionately referred to him as “Papa”. He was always with his grandchildren and was a true father figure to them all.
