With heavy hearts we announce that Doris Patterson, born on Tuesday, November 12, 1929 in Oklahoma, has passed away at the age of 91, in Austin, Texas on the evening of Saturday, July 3, 2021. Please help us celebrate her life, memory, quilting, and the joys she brought to those she knew during each of her 2,891,894,400 seconds with us.
Born Doris Evelyn Story, on Nov 12, 1929, Doris grew up near Alex, OK with her brother Robert “Bob” Dale Story, her mother Eula Faye Lawson and father, Clarence Story. She was a devoted daughter, who helped her parents run the Story Grocery/Feed Store, and a loving sister who once set a bale of hay on fire after sneaking out to smoke grapevines with her brother, Bob. She always had a taste for adventure.
After high school, she would attend Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK, and eventually attain a master’s degree when her children were young. In the 1970s, Doris worked as a driver, and aide to blind and visually impaired individuals in rural Virginia, teaching them life skills and braille.
As a teenager in school, she met her husband and eventual love of her life, Joe, who would take her around the world. While Joe was in the military, Doris found a love for bridge, and played cards with her friends often. She would live in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Virginia, Germany, and Japan -- though, she and Joe would visit many more. Doris loved to share her love and experiences with her friends and family, including her and her husband’s globe-trotting, ensuring that her children and grandchildren were well-traveled themselves. On her many stops throughout the world, Doris would collect fabrics to bring home and use with the only thing that could ever come close to the love she had for her family: quilting.
Doris was a talented craftswoman who dabbled in many fabric arts, but had a true passion for quilting that took off when her and Joe settled back in San Antonio, Texas. Always a quick-witted, but modest person, Doris was never known to brag, but perhaps should have as a National Quilting Judge and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner in many Quilting Shows throughout her life.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Joe “Daddy Joe” Patterson and son Joel Court Patterson. She is survived by her daughter, Dow Patterson Steen; grandchildren, Jillian Cunningham, Austin Ximenes, Jeffrey Patterson, and Ariel Ximenes; and her great-grandchildren Soren Cunningham, and Asher Cunningham.
Funeral and remembrance for Doris will be on July 28th, 2021. A non-denominational service will begin at 10am at Colonial’s Cemetery Chapel (625 Kitty Hawk Rd, Universal City, TX 78418), with a burial to follow at 11:30am at the Fort Sam Houston Cemetery at Shelter #3 (1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, 78209).
