She was born and raised in San Francisco, CA, where her humble beginnings started within the loving and extended family of her Italian-born grandparents. This is where she was truly ingrained with a sense of good food and the love of large family gatherings. In 1964, she graduated from Balboa High School in San Francisco, and later, after starting a family, obtained her real estate and brokerage license and began her career helping clients to purchase their dream homes. Diana was an amazing businesswoman, but her secret desire had always been to open up a music school! She loved classical music-- especially string instruments, in particular the harp.
Diana was fierce, fun, family-oriented, and open-hearted-- as well as a true lover of nature exploration and beautiful coastal trips involving family, fun, food, and wine! She never backed away from a good fight, and if you were lucky enough to be a friend or family member, you were welcomed into her circle of constant entertainment and support. Always an advocate for animals, she cherished and took amazing care of her beautiful pets. When a family of ducks (her favorite birds) strolled into her garden, her bathtub soon became a pool for a gaggle of baby mallard ducks!
Diana was a force to be reckoned with. She lived life her way to the very end. On March 24, 2021, she did just that; she went to her favorite place to camp at the Russian River, ate at her favorite restaurant (enjoying her favorite fish and chips), and went to bed early ...
Diana is survived by her husband Wayne Castello, her daughter Tanya Vetter, her son Todd Schmidt, her grandsons Will and Carl Vetter, her siblings Allen Lange and Lydia Wirth, her cousins Mike and Linda McKay, her loving nieces and nephews, and last, but not least, her beloved pets Mango (her Moluccan Cockatoo) and Sadie (her golden retriever).
Diana, "You will be missed forever and ever and ever, but let us say not in grief, she is no more, but thankful that she was."
I will always remember your “fire”! You were my buddy when we were ready to take on anyone for doing our group wrong. I loved you and will cherish the picture of you holding my baby-who is now 30! Time flew and you will be sorely missed by the Dixon family.

We spent a lot of time with Diana and Allen growing up. She was so generous and helpful. She would be there when it counted. I miss her dearly. Allen and Lydia have done beautiful work on the video and Obituary. Love you always Diana!!!!

I believe I met Mrs. Castello sometime around 1981 after moving to Lafayette and enrolling at Del Ora high school where I met Todd, her son and my friend. If you’re not aware of Del Ora, it is a high school and at this time it was more for troubled teens who were not functioning in the normal high school setting. Todd and I built up a great friendship which led to many adventures and I can not begin to tell you how many meals I got to share in the Castello home or how many times Wayne Castello helped fix my beater car. Mrs. Castello was always there for her family and worked extremely hard to help provide a better future for her children despite what was happening in life. She was always there when times were difficult for her family providing love, compassion and understanding helping to get through the situation and even if you were not part of the family and you needed help, if she could Mrs. Castello would help you, like she did for friends like George. In 1991 I joined the Navy and I remember many times I would be home on leave from the military and would go by and say hi to Mrs. Castello at her office in Orinda and try to find out how and where Todd was. The last time I visited Mrs. Castello was a few years ago at their home, I was with Todd, she was retired now and very happy and was also taking care of her mother, in her, final years of life which not many people would do because of the sacrifices one must make. This did not matter because she was always there out of love for her family.
Diana Castello with out a doubt will be missed, she was strong, caring, direct, resourceful, understanding and full of Love.
Thank you, Diana, for everything you did for me I am defiantly a better person for having known you.

She was my sister, dear friend and family. Over the years, we shared so many beautiful memories, i.e, family gatherings, holiday dinners, sleepovers, jazz festivals and camping trips at Russians River and Monterey, beach parties, trips to Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Sedona, and surrounding towns, hiking in the Redwood Forest in Northern California, discovering waterfalls at Yosemite, McCloud and Burney Falls. Will never forget our trip to Disney World on our way to New York for Mama Mae's 80th birthday party, and last a beautiful vacation in Maui (with Tanya) and Kauai.
Al and I will never forget our trip with you and Wayne to Trinity Lake when we were driving into a forest fire as all of the wild animals were running away from the forest fire. We laughed so hard.
I am so saddened that you are not here but will always remember our conversations about our families. I will never forget you. RIH. Love, Hazel. less

I felt like family and was often included in her great parties. Thank you Diana for being just who you were - it was perfect! Allen, great video montage of all the facets of Diana. My love and condolences to the whole family but especially Tanya, Wayne and the boys.

I was a mama’s boy for all my life due to my dad was always working. I remember the first time she dropped me off at kindergarten and when she drove away I cried. She was always there to answer the phone when I was in prison. And anything else I needed. She had the biggest heart ❤️ of gold. RIP mama less

She knew how to throw a party. Her strength and leadership will be missed. We’ll also miss her Ocean View, Sheridan, Denman, Bal attitude. I don’t know anyone who would mess with her except for the famous doll house incident, Allen. I think that she forgave us and enjoyed exaggerating the story a bit. less
