We are saddened to announce the recent passing of Dennis Gillespie on Monday, July 26th, 2021. Dennis was the beloved husband of Kate Gillespie and cherished father of Meghan Gillespie.
Dennis was a licensed architect and landscape architect; he also held LEED and Planning certifications. For more than 40 years, his work was managing the planning and design of international airport terminals. His most notable airport projects included the San Francisco International Terminal (roadways, garages, and siting the BART and People Mover stations); expansion of the historic Dulles Terminal in Washington DC; Salt Lake City International Airport Master Plan (recently partially opened); New Doha International Airport (Qatar); Boston Logan Delta Terminal A, and most recently programming and planning new international airport concourses in Honolulu.
Dennis' airport work prompted many moves to allow him to focus on projects scattered around the U.S. including more than a dozen planning, landscape and architectural projects in Alaska; transportation and public facility projects in Massachusetts; high-rise, airport, housing and national park service projects in New York and New Jersey; airport and institutional projects in Louisiana; airport and recreation projects in Washington State; and many airport public projects in California, including co-managing the planning for Transbay Terminal in San Francisco. His international work included travel to London (Heathrow new terminal planning), Hong Kong, and China. His employers included SOM, HOK, URS (now AECOM), The Richardson Associates, Perez APC, AvAirPros and Leigh Fisher. For the last four years, Dennis and Kate collaborated on airport plans for LAX and Honolulu.
Dennis was passionate about genealogy and loved researching his Scot Irish heritage.
Dennis loved the natural environment: His first degree was in Outdoor Recreation Planning from the University of Washington. His master's degree in Landscape Architecture was from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Meghan and I selected the Natural Resources Defense Council as our charity. The link to his fund is:
