She grew up on a farm in McGee Missouri. Her father was a horse trader, but had fallen off a horse (while breaking the horse) severely injuring himself and became partially disabled- making it hard to earn a living. When she was barely a teenager, both of her parents passed away, and she and her siblings had to raise themselves. They had very little resources, and didn't even have electricity.
As a young adult she came to CA, started working, then got married & had two kids. While her two kids were very little, she divorced & became a single mom. She raised two kids while also being a working mom. They lived in the SF mission district (not an easy place to grow up). She worked a variety of jobs in SF, the ones I know of are being a hotel clerk, & working in the Hormel meat company factory.
My memories of my grandma begin as a child when she would often help watch me & my two siblings. She also had financially contributed to my parents buying a bigger house for us kids in a nice neighborhood in Hercules CA. We had a good sized yard, fruit trees, my parents bought a swing set & we even had a park across the street! I remember her mowing our lawn with an old school mower that just spins and doesn't have any motor! She was always physically strong, and worked hard even in her old age.
She continued to live in SF until one day I remember her buying her own home in Vallejo CA - paying cash - a huge accomplishment considering her background! She had been saving every penny and was the most frugal person I've ever met. This house had an old tar and gravel style flat rooftop, and my grandma would climb up on that roof to patch it up even in her 70s & 80s. She would do anything to save money and was quite fearless.
During my early college days, I lived at both of my grandmother's homes and spent a lot of time with them. It was nice to be able to stay with family while I was just starting my adult life. My grandma Deloris would always leave snacks out for me. She also would make me crispy quesadillas, and rectangular homemade waffles. She occasionally bought me things from thrift stores and discounted bargain stores. Most of the clothes she picked out I didn't like the style, but once in a while she got something I really liked! I did appreciate her thoughtfulness, and I do even more so now.
Some days I would come home to her house and she would be playing her out of tune piano (and singing with it too), playing her organ (self taught of course), or watching TV. I never knew if I was about to hear hymns or Jerry Springer!
After my grandma moved to a nursing home, her Vallejo home became my first home with Jordan. This was where we lived when we had Josiah & Mayah. We have special memories at that house. It was such a blessing to us!
My grandma sacrificed everything she had for her kids and for her grandchildren, and my life certainly wouldn't be the same without her.
Say hello to my mom for me grandma. Now both of you will be watching over me.
