Cathy Carothers “CC” Agnew, aged 74, died peacefully on December 5th, 2021 after a long battle with heart and lung disease. Cathy was born in Houston, TX. She lived in Rhode Island, California, Louisiana, and many cities in Texas, but always considered Houston to be her hometown. Cathy spent the last 17 years of her life as a resident of Georgetown, TX, living with her daughter, son in law, and granddaughter. Cathy is a descendent of the Shell and Carothers families, some of the first settlers in Georgetown, TX during the 1800s.
Cathy loved Georgetown and loved her neighbors who she considered to be dear friends. She loved spending time outside and loved greeting people. Known to the locals and family as “CC”, she brightened her street with her infectious smile and positive spirit. Cathy never met a stranger and was generous and kind and enthusiastic. She enjoyed giving neighbors homemade cookies and boxes of chocolates to let them know how much she appreciated them. She especially loved children. She loved staying home to raise her children and loved staying home with her granddaughter.
As a lifelong animal lover, Cathy always donated money and supplies to the local animal shelters and even donated proceeds from the sale of her minivan to the Williamson County Animal Shelter. She saved countless lost dogs throughout the years and reunited them with their owners. If she saw a lost dog, there was no stopping her until the dog was safe from being hit by a car. Cathy adopted numerous stray cats throughout the years and spoiled them rotten.
Music was a constant in Cathy’s life and she loved her internet radio. Every Saturday and Sunday, she listened to the Sock Hop and Big Band on KNCT Central Texas Public Radio. She regularly declared the weekend her happiest time because of the Hop and Big Band. She would sing off key and tap her feet to the music every weekend.
Cathy worked hard in her flower garden until she could not physically garden anymore. Her daughter took over the gardening during the last years of Cathy’s life. Cathy’s succulent and cactus garden was her favorite and featured cacti given to her by family and friends.
Cathy struggled with alcoholism on and off during her adult life and was fortunate to find great treatment programs when she needed them. She was very involved with Women for Sobriety in the 1980s in Houston, TX. She struggled again with her sobriety in the early 2000s, which were a difficult time for her. Her treatment at Austin Recovery in May of 2005 was a success and she was proudly sober for the remainder of her life.
Cathy’s faith in God never faltered. She saw God’s handiwork everywhere she looked. A beautiful rainbow or unique cloud formation was the amazing work of God. She regularly prayed for her loved ones and her friends and their families, especially those who were sick or struggling. Cathy never feared death and was ready to go home when God felt it was time.
Cathy is survived by her son, William Agnew, Jr and his wife, Diana, daughter, Barbara Bender and her husband, Jeremy, granddaughter, Serena, sister, Bonnie Alberigo, and her niece and nephews and their families. Although divorced from her husband of 33 years, William Agnew, Sr, Cathy still considered him and his family to be her family.
Her family is grateful for the amazing and tireless nursing staff at Ascension Seton Williamson who took care of her the last week of her life and the Georgetown Fire and EMS who provided top notch emergency care. Waiter with Wheels, Door Dash, Gus’s Pharmacy, Letter Carriers, Amazon Delivery Drivers, UPS, Fed Ex, all brightened her days, especially the last few years of her life when she was not as mobile.
