Heaven opened its gates for Carl Joseph (CJ) Matthews born on December 22, 1941, allowing him a brief visit on this earth. When asked where he was from Carl always said “Heaven”. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky to proud parents Anniliese Buhlmann Matthews and Lorraine Churchill Matthews.
Carl grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, Houston, Texas, St. Louis, Missouri, but was proud to announce his formative years were spent in Monroe, Louisiana on the bayou hunting and fishing. After graduating from St. Louis Academy Carl entered the Army serving his country proudly in Missile Command. He was stationed in Huntsville, Alabama, Italy and Germany returning to Huntsville where he met the love of his life. He entered the computer industry and after thirty years finalized his career with a NASA contractor.
Carl’s faith was foremost in his life. As part of the Clear Creek Community Church family and his Men in Christ Bible study group Carl formed valued relationships that provided support and comfort especially in the last months of his life. Carl’s devoted wife of 53 years, Mary, was always by his side. Carl made it known he had a wonderful life.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his German Aunt and Uncle Karl and Mathilde Buhlmann, Cousin, Karl Buhlmann, Germany
Carl is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Matthews, Houston, Texas, his brothers, Lorraine Churchill “Chip” Matthews, Jr., (Wife Martha “Muffy”), (Daughter, Martha Elizabeth “Marka” Matthews Gioia, (Husband, Robert Michael “BG” ), St. Louis, Mo and Fontaine Maury Matthews of St. Louis, Mo (Daughter, Dr. Ryan Lambert Matthews Coughlan (Husband, Richard “Richie” and Daughters, Quinn Lane and Rowan Lambert Coughlan) of Austin, Tx and Son, Walker Churchill Matthews (Wife, Maura Hagerty Matthews and Son, Thomas Casey Matthews) Washington D.C., Sister-in-law, Kary Matthews, Austin, Tx, German Family Bernhard & Editha Buhlmann and family, Hanno & Luz Mary Buhlmann & family, Germany, his Brothers in Christ, and his loyal friend, Donald Thomas (Tom) Ranna.
The gates to Heaven opened once again on July 27, 2021, to bring Carl home. Carl will always be remembered. In the near future on a clear beautiful day Carl’s ashes will be scattered over his favorite fishing spot.
