As we plan events to celebrate Andrea’s life and how much she meant to each of us, we will post invites with event information on GatheringUs. We plan to share this memorial site with her husband and family members so that they will know more about her contribution to the agencies she served, but also how significantly she impacted the people she worked with and how greatly she will be missed.

Andrea Monson touched each of our lives, and will be forever missed. Many of her work friends have had the pleasure of working with Andrea for more than two decades. Andrea exemplified public service at its best. She was always positive, supportive, and an inspiration to everyone with whom she worked. She will be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, friendship and leadership. She was a true innovator. She will be greatly missed and her legacy will no doubt continue. Andrea is survived by her husband Eric Johnson and the three dogs (Bryn, Ashton and Bennett) that were such an important part of her life. Her husband is planning a memorial service at a later date in Andrea's home state of Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to charities that were near and dear to Andrea:

We hit it off right away and remained close colleagues and friends since. I - and our entire cohort - were shocked and so saddened when we found out this week. She was a passionate leader who was transforming her office. Andrea was FUN - she had all of us laughing and truly enjoying being together. I also know how much she loved Eric and her family, including the four-legged loves. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. less

I feel very fortunate to have continued with work with her here at OMHA. Andrea is one of the reasons I came to OMHA. Andrea was always a warm, kind person who had a wonderful fun personality. I enjoyed her company and friendship. At work, she was remarkable in finding a way forward through tough issues and always cutting through the emotions to see a person’s point of view. I hate losing friends and Andrea was just way, way too young to go. The world was a far better place when she was here.

We met as undergrads and maintained our friendship through the years in WI, MI, and DC, even though we were only able to see each other very infrequently over the past decade. Spending time with her and Eric always renewed my faith in humanity. Our hearts are broken, especially for Eric, her mother, her siblings, and her babies. We love you and will miss you so much, Andrea! less

She was a person who motivated you to be better. She was warm and welcoming and always had time, even when you could barely see her under the pile of projects on her desk. I have never had a boss, nor a job that I was excited about - that made me excited to get out of bed in the morning and come to work, that is, until I met Andrea. Andrea's enthusiasm for our office was contagious, her innate ability to be positive when things didn't always look that way was what everyone prays for when they think about who they want as their leader. Andrea led with passion, enthusiasm and a we-can-conquer-all attitude. Not only was she an inspirational leader for this office and for myself personally, she was a genuinely good person. She will be deeply, deeply missed. What an amazing woman to have touched so many lives and to have impacted so many people - no matter how long you knew Andrea, she made a lasting impact and I am forever grateful for her. less

She was my most trusted colleagues and a dear friend. I had the pleasure of working with Andrea for the last 15 years at SSA and OMHA. She was an extraordinary employee, but a far better person. Andrea touched everyone she came in contact with and made them all feel valued and important. She was universally loved by everyone who knew her well. I keep reminding myself how lucky I was to have Andrea as a friend, but at this moment, the void she has left in my life, and that of everyone else who knew and loved her, is immeasurable. less

Andrea was my supervisor while I was a detailee for the development of ECAPE. Andrea was one of the most dedicated and hardworking people I have ever met, she always went above and beyond. She was really passionate about ECAPE and all of her other contributions at OMHA. Andrea cared about everyone on her staff. I will always remember how she was encouraging and how she helped me believe in myself and in the work product I delivered on the ECAPE development team. She often took time out of her day to call me and others on the phone and ask us how everything was going and how she could help. Andrea was one of a kind, she was a mentor and a true inspiration. I am so sad and still in disbelief that she left us so soon. I will always remember her smile, her laughter, personality, and the way she made everyone feel comfortable and appreciated. I am truly grateful for the time I spent with Andrea. less

Andrea was one of the warmest and kindest persons I have known, and truly was a gentle soul. As those on her team will tell you, she was always so thoughtful, and passionate about her work and she was also the type of friend and colleague that would go the extra mile to help on a project or with a co-worker in need. In leading teams across the country, Andrea had a great ability to make even the most complex information accessible to any group she was talking to. She was an innovator when we got stuck, always the one to find a temporary solution or work-around, still keeping us all moving forward, and always keeping us smiling and laughing. I am heartbroken at Andrea's passing and I feel what so many of us are feeling across the county - a profound loss, as she was a close friend. I feel proud and blessed to know Andrea as I did and will miss her so much. On behalf of the Irvine field office and the greater HHS family, we share our deepest condolences to her husband Eric and her family at this very difficult time.
