Alice was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and aunt, but above all a woman of faith who loved Jesus. Spending time with family and friends was what she appreciated most, but she also loved boating, fishing, going to the beach, and working in the yard. She is remembered for her fierce love, her brilliant and inquisitive mind, her tireless service, grace, poise and her humility.
Alice was born in Ft Myers in 1936. In her childhood, before and during WWII, her family moved to Key West where her father Steve Stuart worked in the Naval Shipyard and her mother Beulah “Pearl’” Stuart had a seamstress shop called “Young Charmers” on Duval Street. Alice attended the local Catholic school, the Convent of Mary Immaculate, and had many fond memories and stories from her time there. After returning to Ft. Myers, she attended Ft.Myers Green Wave High School where she met her future husband and the love of her life, Ray Miller. After high school she became a stewardess to pursue her love of travel, but when she and Ray were married in 1959 she moved to Gainesville, FL and supported her husband through the Civil Engineering program at the University of Florida. In 1960 they moved to Naples, FL, where Ray joined W.R. Wilson and Associates, later known as Wilson Miller Barton Soll & Peek and later WilsonMiller. They welcomed their firstborn, Stuart, in 1961. His sister Julie followed in 1962. In addition to their permanent home in Naples, the family enjoyed decades of memories from their shared home in Sugarloaf Key, FL and in later years at their farm in Hayesville, NC.
She lived her faith out by loving her friends, neighbors and family members. She attended many women’s bible studies, hosted youth and community events at her home, and was Chairwoman of the Bonita Springs chapter of the Christian Women’s Club. As can be attested to by the affections of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Alice had a gift with young children and was a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist of Naples for many years. Ray and Alice later worshiped at Covenant Presbyterian Church and most recently Bay Presbyterian Church. Alice had a heart for helping others and sharing God’s love and as time passed, Alice and Ray spent time doing short term mission work with local churches and Engineering Ministries Int’l. Their work included projects in Ukraine, Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Kenya and Baltimore, as well as taking grandchildren on many trips. She was an avid reader and especially loved history and applied that to researching her own family’s genealogy.
Alice is survived by her husband, Ray, of 63 years, her two children, Stuart and Julie, brother Steve Stuart of Greenville, SC, grandchildren Sarah, Liana, Jeffrey, Moriah, Michaela, Wesley and Yates, as well as four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Bay Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs on February 5, 2022 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Pregnancy Resource Center of SW Florida. https://supportprc.org/give/
