Agnes was the daughter of Amos Amancio Gomez of Fogo, Cape Verde and Ethel Rixner of Edgard, St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana. She was the third child of four siblings. She was preceded in death by her sister Clarice Harris and brother Clarence Romas Dela Rosa, two sons Anthony and Walter Woods. Agnes is survived by an older sister, Kathryn Gomez Blackmon who is 95 years old.
Agnes' father Amancio died 21 days before she was born. Agnes and her two sisters lived eleven years in a foster home. She reunited with her mother at the age of twelve.
Agnes was sixteen years old at the beginning of World War 2. She lived in West Oakland not far from the Army base where soldiers made the last stop before going overseas. Agnes, along with some of her friends volunteered as hostesses at the Oakland Colored USO where dances were held every Saturday night.
Agnes graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1944. She enrolled at San Francisco City College but had to drop out after one semester. In 1945 she began working at the Oakland Army Base where she met Thomas Woods who also worked there. She worked there until she married Thomas Woods in 1946. Between 1946 and 1957 they had nine children Bradley, Bruce, Anthony, Gregory, Walter, Laura, Luana, Lawrence and Tamara.
Agnes was very outgoing and active in local politics. Agnes was president of the Lockwood elementary PTA for six years and attended many national conferences, conventions, and seminars. Agnes was a den mother for the Cub Scouts.
In the 1960's and 70's Agnes became involved in local politics and was a community organizer. She was a member of the Oakland School Board and worked helping elect mayors and city council members.
Agnes divorced in 1969 and in 1973 married Robert Moses and remained married 42 years until Roberts death in 2015.
From 1970 to 1979 Agnes worked as a recruiter and director of Oakland Camp Fire Girls.
In 1979 Agnes and Bob relocated to San Diego CA and remained there for thirteen years. During those years she was the field director for Girl Scouts of America. Agnes was responsible for initiating the in-school scouting program in schools throughout San Diego County.
At the age of 63 Agnes received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Union For Expermental Colleges and Universities or UECU.
Agnes and Bob relocated to Santa Fe New Mexico in 1992. While there, Agnes continued her activism. She was elected President of the Santa Fe chapter of NAACP from 2002 to 2009.
Her husband Robert passed away in 2015. That same year Agnes returned to the Bay Area where she remained with her daughter Laura until her passing February 2020. She was 93 years old.
Agnes will be missed by her seven surviving children, twenty seven grandchildren and thirty eight great-grandchildren.
