I met John’s parents not long after I met John. I remember how happy they were to meet me. Some years later, after John and I had gotten engaged but before we got married, Dennis pulled me aside and said, “You know, I have to hand it to you, I never thought anyone was ever going to tie this one down. But I knew you were the one to do it. I knew it when I heard you say, years ago, that you like to give John as much rope as he needs. Boy, were those the right words!” I laughed then as I still do now at his sentiment. I knew in his way, Dennis was doing exactly what he’s best at; giving love...while also giving advice. I’ve never forgotten that advice though, and to this day John still has that long rope. I’m so grateful to have deserved Dennis’ love, and of course his advice.
