From Greg Smart:
Uncle Bill was a central influence in my life, particularly after my family moved from Omaha to New Haven in 1965. Shortly thereafter, some fondest memories begin with a visit to McGraw Hill Publishers in NYC, where he gave me a $50. credit to buy paperbacks, and I picked out precious volumes that helped start me on a life of study and exploration. Seeing his bachelor pad near the United Nations then, and aware of his long association with Brazil-where Anita & Sylvia were born-I thought Bill lived a very cool and interesting life, and I admired his cultural awareness. Manhattan museums, mutual interest in art, music, and books, and Bill’s job in the International Division all sparked my own enduring similar interests.

After my dad’s death, it was Bill who came to my Yale graduation, and who always communicated his curiosity about what projects I was working on. As I’m sure all others who knew him would confirm, I never met anyone who was as devoted and conscientious about keeping in touch. Over the years we would see each other in New Haven, Cambridge, New Hampshire, Cincinnati, Greenwich, and Florida, More than anyone I have ever met, Bill’s fundamental decency, kindness, and connectedness to other human beings was nonpareil. In these final years, Bill and Diane were wonderful hosts when I visited D.C.Ft. Lauderdale and Pompano Beach.
