I first met John in 2008 on a hiking trip our friend Claire Gorfinkel had organized. Over the course of 6 days we hiked 34 miles, from Agnew Meadows over Donahue Pass to Tuolumne Meadows. Many subsequent summers we all met again, once to do another multi-day hike in the Emigrant Wilderness, once in Death Valley, several more times in Tuolumne Meadows. John was a strong hiker, an eager explorer, and also worked hard to make sure we all had filtered water and good food.
