My fondest memories of my mate Elton are the two of us touring the many poker clubs of South West London. Swanny and I would play as much as four times a week. We would usually agree to share our winnings which suited me as he was a much better poker player than me. (I would never have told him that). One day we played in a very exclusive tournament in Teddington. We always agreed not to go up against each other but we both had great hands and with us both being stubborn gits we played the hand out and I knocked him out. He wasn’t happy and whispered to me “use those chips wisely!” He then spent the next two hours giving me the ‘Swanny glare’ from across the club. Under pressure and fearing he was going to drive off and leave me in Teddington I managed to win the tournament and we had a great laugh driving home a few quid better off. Fittingly, the last time I saw Swanny was when we met up to play poker in our favourite club in Croydon. We were on separate tables but met up on the break as we’ve done hundreds of times before and Dave told me that he had never been happier than he was at that time. The special thing about Dave is you always knew where you stood with him. If you had wound him up he was never shy in letting you know but likewise if he loved you he would let you know that too and he had the biggest heart. Even during lockdown he was constantly getting in touch to check my family was okay. I love you mate and I promise to use my chips wisely x
