Fue Maestro en Artes por la Universidad de Loyola, en Los Ángeles, California. En 1956, recibió el Doctorado en Filosofía por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México; fue profesor de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras desde 1957 y, desde 1988, investigador emérito de esta Casa de Estudios.

Miembro emérito de la Academia Mexicana de la Historia, El Colegio Nacional, la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua, la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos, en el Área de Antropología e Historia, León-Portilla fue acreedor de numerosas distinciones como 25 doctorados Honoris Causa de universidades de México, América Latina, Estados Unidos y Europa, además de premios y condecoraciones en México, Bolivia, Perú, Cuba, Estados Unidos, España, Francia e Italia, entre otros países.

A public memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, August 17, in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom at Morgan State University’s (MSU) Student Center, 1700 E. Coldspring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251.
